FOLLOWING successful regeneration and recovery from the Sea Empress oil disaster, Tenby has been nominated as a contender to win the 50 Connect UK's Favourite Place Award 2004.

In a nationwide competition launched in October, visitors to http://www.50connect.co.uk">www.50connect.co.uk, the UK's leading web portal for the over 45s, have been asked to nominate their favourite place in the UK for a chance to win a free weekend break at a destination of their choice.

While the list of nominations includes the usual suspects of popular British tourist destinations like London, Edinburgh and Bath, there are a few surprises in the list too, among them Tenby.

Lynda Hamilton, travel editor at 50 Connect, said: "We have had a phenomenal response to the competition with hundreds of votes for every town nominated.

"Considering that Tenby was knocked severely after the Sea Empress oil spill in 1996, we are delighted that the town has been nominated and the hard work that everyone has put in to regenerating the town is being recognised by visitors."

Just some of the comments 50 Connect have received about Tenby include:

'A superb seaside town with a lovely beach. Nearby there's a fantastic theme park - Oakwood - with the largest wooden roller coaster in Europe. There's loads to do even when the weather isn't nice, such as the Crystal Maze at Canaston.'

While another wrote: 'Loads of places to explore on foot or in the car. For over three years, Tenby has been nominated in the UK's top 10 safest, liveliest and fun-loving towns to party-in the New Year. So summer or winter, Tenby's the place to be!'

The UK's Favourite Place competition is open until Mid-January, when the winning destination will be announced on live radio and declared the 50 Connect Favourite UK Place 2004. The winner of last year's competition was Torquay in Devon.
