Tenby Museum and Art Gallery recently received funding through the Welsh Government’s Winter of Wellbeing initiative (via the Federation of Welsh Museums and Art Galleries).

The Winter of Wellbeing is designed to support the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of all children and young people up to the age of 24.

As part of this initiative the museum will be working towards the creation of a Storytelling Club.

Museum Curator Mark Lewis said: “This is a great opportunity for us to reach out and work with young people on a creative programme.

“We will be working with renowned storytellers Phil Okwedy and Peter Stevenson on a series of participatory events throughout February and March, with the aim of an extended legacy that will see the establishment of a Storytelling Club at the museum.

“It is planned that this club will be run by young people, who will be receiving training in the art of storytelling from Phil.”

Phil said: “While oral storytelling is ancient art form, it is also one that is fundamental to what it means to be human right now.

“So, as a teller of folk and fairy tales, myths and legends I am delighted to have the opportunity, via Tenby Museum’s new Storytelling Club, to facilitate the development of the next generation of oral storytellers.

“Working with these old tales and the artefacts in the museum, they will have the opportunity to develop their storytelling skills and I can’t wait to see what new stories they will create.”

The first event takes place at the museum on February 19. Spaces are unfortunately limited for these events so, if you are interested, please do contact the museum (via our email) for further details.
