Tenby Museum and Art Gallery has been longlisted for the Daily Telegraph Family Friendly Museum of the Year Award, announced in the Sunday Telegraph Life supplement (June 22). The museum was one of 20 selected from an initial list of 800 nominees. Only two other museums in Wales made the longlist - Bodelwyddan Castle in Rhyl and The Cardiff Story. Tenby Museum's collections manager Mark Lewis, who made the nomination on behalf of the museum, said: "We are delighted to have made it onto the longlist with such museums as Bodelwyddan and the Ashmolean. We have worked hard to adopt the Kids in Museums manifesto and offer as many family friendly activities and events as we possibly can. There are dressing up area, hands-on interactive displays, quiz sheets, treasure hunts, jigsaws and drawing areas. We are having new hands-on activities installed in our upper galleries very shortly. "Last year, we actively participated in the Kids In Museums Takeover Day by offering students the opportunity to curate a six-week art show in our gallery which was a great success. The museum offers free admission to all accompanied children and actively encourages involvement, education, interaction, and of course fun! "If anyone would like to have the opportunity to be a mystery judge and help to pick the winner, then please email [email protected]">[email protected] We certainly hope to make the shortlist and who knows we may even win!" The 20 longlisted museums are presented to a panel of experts, including children's author Damian Dibben, Game of Thrones actress Hannah Murray and historian Helen Castor. The panel is chaired by Dame Jenny Abramsky, chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund. A shortlist is announced in July and the museums that make it onto this second list are visited anonymously by families, using the Kids in Museums manifesto as a guide to their family-friendliness.
