Last Thursday, in the majestic acoustics of St. Mary's Church, a large and appreciative audience were treated to vintage Tenby Male Choir. MC David Blackmore built up a repartee with the audience ensuring a delightful evening was had by all. Soloist for the concert, which was supported by Sainbury's, was Paul Varallo, who was also on form, singing a selection of well-known songs, including Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific by Rogers and Hammerstein, Bruscia La Terra (The Earth Burns) in Sicilian from the film the Godfather and Stars from Les Miserables. In the absence of choir chairman, stand-in steward, Duncan Hilling, marshalled the troops using a Zulu spear and shield - a novel approach to choir discipline. It was quite an honour when a member of the audience requested the ever popular Ratchie, a song which her late husband had proudly performed with the choir a couple of years ago. As usual, the audience participation in My Grandfather's Clock was hilarious, with several participants obviously not knowing their right hand from their left hand. Yes it was a memorable evening ending in compliments such as "what an entertaining choir", "I'm coming to hear again as soon as possible" and " when are you singing next year - I want to book my holiday when you are in St Mary's". Such is the reputation of Tenby Male Choir! The choir has a very busy couple of months ahead. Last night, we sang for HOPE - there will be a report next week. Looking ahead for July, we are in St. Mary's on July 10, St. Johns on the 15th and St. Mary's again on the 22nd. August is equally busy - more on that in a later article. The choir have already accepted a number of wedding engagements, but are still prepared to consider further requests. Anyone interested in booking the choir for a wedding should contact secretary Dave Stewart-Walvin on 01834 844926. The choir rehearse twice a week from 8 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Tenby and County Club on the Croft. If you are interested in joining a vibrant and very friendly bunch of 'lads' please feel free to come along and listen at any of our rehearsals. You won't regret it.
