Last week was a slightly different week from normal in that we had no rehearsals and no formal concerts but we still did plenty of singing and entertaining.
On Tuesday, we had our final hotel concert at the Giltar Hotel, Tenby. Concerts at the Giltar are always a little less formal, but this one in particular was much more of a night's entertainment for the audience than just a concert. Yes, we sang a number of choir songs in two sessions, but we also featured Eric Mullins doing 'If I were a rich man' from Fiddler on the Roof, Paul Varallo did 'Funiculi funicular', the traditional Neapolitan song by Peppino Turco ably backed by Eric Mullins, Keith Nixon, Maurice Griffiths and Gavin Wright.
In between all of this, Eddie Stapleton did his stand up comedy act and finished with an 'after the watershed' version of 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?'
Perhaps the most entertaining episode, as it included amusement for the choir as well as the audience, was when Gavin Wright's horn failed to hoot. It is our custom when singing 'My Grandfather's Clock' for the choir to accompany it with a variety of noises made with contraptions which hoot, whirr, buzz to add sound effects, but in this case Gavin's car horn had been doctored and when it came to his first chance to shine, it failed to make a sound. His face was a picture of puzzlement and the choir, audience and conductor soon picked up what had happened and began falling about.
On Thursday, we held our first concert at Lawrenny Arms. It was a lovely evening, amidst stunning scenery and a very large crowd It was an extremely successful evening for the choir and something we look forward to doing again next year.
Although we are nearing the end of this hectic concert season its certainly not over yet, we have four more concerts to come at St. Mary's, we will be doing another 'first' in St. Florence, we will be going to Tenby Golf Club and will also be performing at the impressively rebuilt and refurbished Regency Hall in Saundersfoot before finishing off with a weekend trip to Worcester Cathedral. So there is quite a varied and enjoyable time still to come.
Next week, the first two September concerts will be at St. Florence church on Tuesday, September 3 (7.30 pm) and then at St. Mary's Church on Thursday, September 5 (8 pm).
We always welcome visitors or potential new members. There is also a web site http://www.tenbymalechoir.org">www.tenbymalechoir.org and a Facebook account (just Google Tenby Male Choir Facebook) or you can get more information on anything about the choir on (01834) 813198.
