Tuesday's Remembrance concert was a poignant affair. Our Town Remembers was very apt as local dignitaries and members of the community gathered to pay tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom and way of life.
Canon Andrew Davies opened the proceedings with a prayer, followed by the introduction of the choir. Audrey Hilling began by reciting the poem 'For the Fallen', which was followed by the choir's rendition of the same, featuring Tom Pierce as soloist. This was immediately followed by Y Tangnefeddwyr ('The Peacemakers'), which set the tone for the evening. MC, David Blackmore, kept his oratory in keeping with occasion.
The first soloist was mezzo soprano, Rhian Morgan, who sang pieces including 'Keep the Home Fires Burning'. This was followed by the reading of war poems by Vickie Chiffi and John Morgan.
The choir's second set included the poignant 'Bring Him Home' and the rousing 'Christus Salvatur'.
Next, Paul Varallo led the singing of a medley of World War I songs, during which the audience enthusiastically joined in. This was followed by further readings of war poems read by Vickie Chiffi and John Morgan. These included poems by Wilfred Owen, a Welsh poet from the Shropshire area, who was shot and killed on November 4, 1914, just six days from the end of the war.
The choir's third set included Isis and Osiris from Mozart's Magic Flute and American trilogy and Morte Christe, the latter two being accompanied by John Harrison on St. Mary's magnificent organ.
Canon Andrew Davies administered the final service, during which the renovated window was dedicated.
After a two-minute silence, the Last Post was played which solemnly ended the proceedings.
Deputy Mayor, Paul Rapi thanked the choir, MD Ian Williams and accompanist Jill Williams for their contribution to a special evening. Coincidently he mentioned that our singing of Climb Every Mountain had reminded him of when he had visited Vermont where he came across the graves of the Von Trapp family, featured in the film Sound of Music.
To quote a member of the audience - "you got it right this evening." We will remember them!
As mentioned last week, at the end of November the choir will be recording its new CD which will be on general release early in the New Year. 2015 is an important year for the choir when we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary (more on this later). The 2015 programme is full and is in the process of being finalised - if any organisation wishes to put in a request for the choir's services for 2016, please make your request as soon as possible, as it looks as if it's going to be another busy year.
To repeat myself (ad infinitum) - we are entering our learning period, so this would be an excellent time for anyone who wishes to join the choir. We are a very friendly 'bunch of lads' who enjoy singing and a binding camaraderie which is often commented upon by those who meet us. So why not come along and see what it's all about. You won't regret it! Rehearsals take place twice a week from 8 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Tenby and County Club on the Croft.
As stated above, the 2015 concert programme is full, but the choir is prepared to consider further requests such as weddings or private functions - anyone interested in booking the choir for a wedding or a private function should contact secretary David Stewart-Walvin on 01834 844926.
There is also information about the choir on our web site http://www.tenbymalechoir.org">www.tenbymalechoir.org and a Facebook account (just do an internet search for Tenby Male Choir Facebook), You can also order a CD via our website and you can get more information on anything about the choir by contacting the chairman, Terry Evans, on 01834 844256, or the secretary on the number above.
