As the Welsh rugby team were winning the Grand Slam, Tenby Ladies hockey team secured the West Wales Cup, playing the semi-final against Pembroke on Saturday, March 15, and the final against Dinefwr on Sunday, March 16. The Saturday match saw Tenby draw 2-2 with local rivals Pembroke in a very tense match, during which Pembroke were the ones to score first. Tenby replied almost straightaway with a super reverse shot from Sophie Treacy. However, due to injuries, Tenby went down to nine players early in the second half and Pembroke went ahead once more. With a nasty gash on her knee, Tenby's Alex Pearce then defied all the odds and came on to score the equaliser. The match went to penalty strokes after full-time had been played, with Michelle Johns scoring first for Tenby and showing the rest of the players how it was done. Annie Lindsell in Tenby's goal made some superb saves to send Tenby to the final. The final against Dinefwr the following day was a very exciting game with end to end hockey. Tenby held their own through great work by defenders Michelle, Ruth Ferguson, Rachel Davies and the midfield of Jude Roberts, Julie Jones, Barnie Squires, Miriam Brown and captain Mandy Lewis. Annie Rossiter joined the forward line with Sophie to keep the Dinefwr defence on their toes and youngsters Hayley and Georgia Lewis gained experience as subs. The match ended in a draw (0-0), so it was penalty strokes once more. Michelle again scored the first stroke, but Dinefwr were not going to give up and managed to level the score at 2-2, with Tenby to take the deciding stroke. Rachel Davies, at only 17 years of age, showed great composure and slotted the winner home.
