Tenby Ladies hockey team entertained Dinefwr from Llanelli on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the West Wales Cup. Tenby had won their previous fixture in this competition with only nine players and on penalty strokes. This time they took to the pitch with 11. Dinefwr started the brighter of the two teams, being quick to pass and quick to close Tenby down. They denied the home team a chance to develop any passing rhythm in the first 20 minutes. They were awarded three penalty corners during this time and it was from the third that they scored the only goal of the game. The ball was passed to the top of the 'D' and hit back to a player nearing Tenby's right goalpost. The ball lifted and struck the back board. Tenby restarted with some vigour and had their chances, but at half-time 0-1 it remained. In the second half, Tenby lost count of the penalty corners that they were awarded. No matter how they varied their execution, the Dinefwr defence thwarted their attempts time and time again. Not disheartened, Tenby continued to press forward through the containment work of Miriam, Mandy, Barney and Julie in midfield. Piercing runs by Sophie, Elen and Alex rewarded Tenby with continued penalties pressurising within the Dinefwr 25, but luck was against them and they just couldn't find the back of the net in open play either. Dinefwr were happy to sit back and break occasionally. They were stopped by Lisa, Michelle and Andrea, in the back line, only threatening the goal once when a sliding tackle by goalie Annie and a subsequent clearance from Michelle stopped them. A very even and fair game was enjoyed by both teams. However, Tenby will rue their missed chances losing them a place in the semi-final. Tenby have two remaining league fixtures, both dates yet to be decided.
