Tenby Junior School and Tenby Rotary Club met twice last week.

On Tuesday, Rotarians attended the school assembly and made a presentation on the End Polio Now campaign. Two short films were shown to the pupils and staff.

The first one explained that Rotary has been involved in polio eradication since 1985 when there were 1,000 new cases a day. By last year the disease had been reduced to just four countries and there were only 1,500 new cases.

The second film was about an immunisation day in Northern India. This took place in late 2009 and 85,000 young children were immunised in one day.

The pupils at the Junior School were told that it is Rotary International's aim to raise $200 million. If this target is reached, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will add a further $355 million. It is hoped that the total of $555 million will be sufficient to finally eliminate polio from the world.

Various excellent questions were raised by the pupils who were made aware that every £1 donated will pay for five children to be immunised.

On Sunday, following an excellent 'St. David's Day' Luncheon at the Giltar Hotel, Rotarians and their guests were entertained by the Junior School choir.

Led by Miranda Davies, music teacher at the school, the choir, who were dressed in Welsh costumes, sang beautifully. All those present, thoroughly enjoyed the variety of songs and are very grateful to the young girls and Gareth for giving up their Sunday afternoon.
