The recent Estyn inspection of Tenby Junior Community School has been a rewarding experience. The headteacher, Mrs. Jan Llewellyn, was delighted that the inspection team recognised the strong commitment of all staff which has resulted in a further improvement in the overall quality of its provision since the last inspection six years ago. According to the inspection, the school stands proudly as 'a good school with outstanding features that gives very good value for money'. The report recognises that the leadership and strategic management of the school has contributed to the improvement in standards and provision and celebrates the high standards of teaching, with 100 per cent of teaching being judged as good or good with outstanding features. The range and quality of experiences offered to pupils of all abilities across a rich curriculum and the highly effective inclusion programme are highlighted as outstanding features. The development of key skills across the curriculum has been a major focus since the last inspection. This has been successfully accomplished through the staff's training and development programme and the sharing of expertise within the school. This was seen as making a highly effective contribution to the improvement in pupil's standards of achievement and as such is recognised as a major strength within the school. The contribution that each staff member makes to the positive work ethos and the very good behaviour displayed throughout the school have been acknowledged. The provision for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development has outstanding features. The school's partnership with the parents, the community and other institutions are good with outstanding features. The range of educational visits, visitors to school and extra-curricular opportunities for pupils are seen as making an outstanding contribution to pupils' learning experiences. Pupils, in turn, make a significant contribution to the life of the school and the community, and the role of the school council is an outstanding feature of school life. The recently completed, major capital investment by Pembrokeshire County Council has transformed the school's accommodation and this is now acknowledged as an outstanding feature of the school. The quality of the self-evaluation process undertaken by the school has been confirmed and supported through the inspection process. The recommendations for further improvement have already been identified within the school's Development Plan and should lead to a refinement in current practice in order to further raise standards. Pembrokeshire County Councillor Carol Cavill, chair of governors, congratulated the headteacher and her staff for their continued commitment and professionalism and wished the school success in the future.
