Tenby Swifts Under 12s travel to Pembroke Dock Quins last Sunday morning and, although the going was very soft underfoot, weather conditions were perfect for flowing rugby.
The Under 12s have been training hard all season and have played very well in recent matches, in spite of not having recorded a win so far.
The game kicked off with only 14 men aside and after only five minutes it looked as though a win was going to elude them once again as their Quins opponents drew first blood with a good try under the posts to lead 7-0.
Tenby, however, responded well and, despite playing up the slope, managed to cross twice in quick succession, with tries from Luke Barrow and Alex Thomas. Just before half-time, the hard-working Ben Roberts crossed to extend Tenby's lead to 17-7 at the break.
Now with the slope in their favour, Tenby continued to battle hard in the tight exchanges and worked the ball wide at every opportunity to winger and eventual man-of-the-match Charlie Gammer.
Tenby's pressure paid off as they scored two more good tries, with Alex Thomas claiming his second of the game, before skipper James Brace rounded off the scoring. Ben Roberts was successful with three out of the five conversions, giving Tenby their first win of the season.
Coaches Hammy and Harty, along with team managers Ian and Michelle, were delighted with the boys' performance and have been impressed with the way they have been playing all season; despite only winning one of their matches, they have played well and never given up.
All involved with the Under 12s are looking forward to more success in the New Year and urge any players eligible to join them at training on Wednesday evenings, 6 'til 7 pm, at The Clicketts.
