Tenby Under 13s played their second game of the season on Sunday. Tenby looked very smart in their new kit, very kindly sponsored once again by Dai and Andrea Ormand, of Rowston. After a convincing win against Crymych three weeks ago, the boys were all looking forward to the tough game that they always have when they play Haverfordwest. From the kick-off, Tenby had to fight hard to control Haverfordwest, but it wasn't long before their opponents were 10-nil in the lead due to missed tackles and the visitors' fast backs. Tenby, however, never gave up and soon Greg C spotted a gap in the Haverfordwest defence and scored a great try under the posts, which was ably converted by Greg P. Tenby started the second half as they finished the first, on the attack, and it wasn't long before Greg C crossed the line once again to complete his brace and Greg P converted with a great kick. All the Tenby boys played well, fighting hard to keep their well deserved lead, with Matthew doing some great tackling and the scrum and lineout working well. Unfortunately, Haverfordwest didn't give up and came back with two breakaway tries to leave the final score Tenby 14 Haverfordwest 20. The Tenby boys played a brilliant match, leading for some of the second half, something they have never done against Haverfordwest before, and were very unlucky to lose. Tenby fielded: Jack Butler, Dylan Griffin (capt.), Wesley Bonser, Cameron Wood, Adam North, James Oakley, Matthew Lewis, Rob Luly, Ben Prestwich, Joe Dennis, Greg Palin, James Woods, Elliot Randell, Ben Thomas, Greg Caine, Jo Farrell, Henry Pritchard Jones, Henry Whittaker, Jake Procter, Luke Hicks, Andrew Murphy.
TENBY UTD U16s 19 pts. CARDIGAN U16s 18
Tenby Under 16s won an exciting league match by a whisker last Sunday at Heywood Lane against a visiting Cardigan team that had come for victory. There had been a previous 'friendly' encounter this season, so the teams knew each other and it made for a hard-fought affair, with no quarter asked or given. Tenby were forced to make some positional changes again this week, but such was the skill and commitment of those playing out of position and the magnificent performance of the team as a whole, the foundation was laid for success. The outstanding performance by the back row trio of Jason Ronowitz (captain and No.8) and flankers Joseff Morris and Sam Ferguson was rewarded with a try for each of them, two of which were converted by centre Jamie Williams, giving Tenby their 19 points, with the visitors replying with two tries, one conversion and two penalties to fall short of the mark with 18. In fact, a failed conversion attempt in the last two minutes of ordinary time could have shaded it for them, so there was mighty relief in the Tenby ranks when the final whistle sounded. The basis for the win was provided by a powerful performance from the pack which contained two converted wings in Will Hughes and James North, neither of whom looked out of place. With Yannic Parker spearheading drives into the heart of the defence (despite his borrowed boots) and Robert Jones showing initiative in taking the ball on, the Cardigan pack were rattled. Roy Osborne was his usual fiery self and with Ronowitz, Morris and Ferguson outstanding, this mobile unit gained vital yards consistently. Jack Baker had been pressed into service at scrum- half and he was a revelation. His service was accurate and quick and as a back row forward he had the strength and knowledge to turn in a first- rate performance. We could have witnessed the start of a new career. As mentioned, the service to outside-half Toby Smith was smooth and this allowed Toby to control the game with his judicious feeding of the threequarter line and decisions on when to break. The centres were a formidable pair, with the strength of Jonathan Miller at inside centre being complemented by the direct running of Jamie Williams at outside. There is pace aplenty in the back three, with Vince Gyseman and Tom Harland turning in committed performances on the wings and making some vital tackles and James Whitehouse making his first appearance in the second half showing outstanding attacking qualities and speed. Behind them was of course Chris Heesom, who was safe under the high ball in difficult windy conditions and who returned the ball to great advantage in counter-attack. Late in the game, Tom Baker came on, again in an unaccustomed position in the forwards, and he will have more opportunities as the season wears on. The win places Tenby in third position in the league and with plenty of fixtures to come, the future looks promising. Tenby fielded: Chris Heesom, Vince Gyseman, Tom Harland, James Whitehouse, Jamie Williams, Jonathan Miller, Toby Smith, Jack Baker, Robert Jones, Yannic Parker, Will Hughes, James North, Roy Osborne, Sam Ferguson, Jason Ronowitz (capt) and Joseff Morris.
