The Tenby 'Vikings' Under 9s travelled to Whitland with a squad of 17 for their first match of the new year. But while it was pleasing to see so many boys wearing the red and black, the numerous changes didn't provide the players with enough time to settle into the game.

Whitland stormed into a three-try lead, only for Tenby's little dynamo, Harry Owen, to pull back two tries with his elusive, jinking runs.

Henri Pritchard and Robert Luly made good yardage, while Loui Fecci tackled superbly. Cai Evans is beginning to use his upper body strength to rip balls out of the tackle and feed his speed merchants.

Whitland added four more tries, before Philip Horsley capped a fine performance with a try in the corner.

Another improved performance for Mike Evans's boys, but perhaps two matches would be better for all to benefit.

Tenby Swifts are grateful for Peter Kidney's kind generosity in donating a brand new tea urn for refreshments during home matches. Official tea lady, Fran Fecci, is now looking out for a second-hand ice cream machine!

TENBY U11s 40 pts CRYMYCH U11s 5

Crymych had kindly stepped in to provide the opposition for this buoyant Tenby side last Sunday on their home turf.

The game was played in heavy drizzle on a soggy pitch, but once again the spectators were treated to an open game despite the conditions.

Crymych were under early pressure when Patrick Roberts charged down a clearance kick from the home scrum-half to score a try in the first minute. He then converted using Toby Smith's new state-of-the-art kicking tee.

The pack tore into the opposition, which boasted the county's top try scoring prop, and completely outplayed them.

Jack Baker was outstanding with his dynamic running and ball-winning, playing his best game of the season and being unlucky not to cross the line on several occasions; Joseff Morris and Yannic Parker were his collaborators in an all action front row.

Danny McDermott captained his side from second row and together with Patrick Roberts covered every inch of the ground. Robert Jones and Oliver Goldwait bolstered the pack from the subs bench and played with commitment and vigour.

The usual half-back pairing of Keifer Thomson and Jamie Williams plotted new moves and James Canton was given a taste of the scrum-half position in the middle part of the game.

Once again the balanced running of Toby Smith was rewarded with two tries for him, and James Criddle made the most of his limited opportunities in this game to add another try to his ever-increasing collection.

Jamie Williams dummied and ghosted his way for his try and Matthew Davies powered in for his.

Thomas Griffin got a taste of the action and will learn from the experience.

Patrick converted five of the six tries scored to complete another high-scoring win. (bring your tee next week Toby).

In reply, Crymych scored one consolation try.

If we return to Crymych in two weeks time, as we are scheduled to, then let us hope the weather improves. Or does it, up in them thar hills?

Tenby fielded: Jack Baker, Yannic Parker, Joseff Morris, Daniel McDermott (capt), Patrick Roberts, Robert Jones, Oliver Goldwait, Keifer Thomas, Jamie Williams, Toby Smith, James Canton, Mathew Davies, James Criddle and Thomas Griffin.

TENBY U14s 39 YSTALYFERA U14s 15

On a wet Sunday morning, Tenby U14s travelled to Ystalyfera for their first match of the new year.

For the first 10 minutes Ystalyfera took control of the match, with Tenby unable to break out of their 22. However, Tenby's defence remained solid, which enabled the forwards to take control.

Conditions underfoot were atrocious and credit must be given to both sides for the fine display of handling in such conditions.

After 15 minutes, Tenby broke away and took play deep into the Ystalyfera half. From a forward drive, the ball was recycled to scrum-half Rhys Thomas, who fed outside-half Steve Handicott, who dummied his way over the line for the first try of the morning, which Adam Ball converted, making the score 7-0.

Tenby were now taking control of the game, with Ben Field-Thomas at centre picking up a loose ball and scoring a fine unconverted try, making the score 12-0.

Ystalyfera replied with a fine unconverted try, making the score 12-4, but Robbie Tuttle then ran 25 yards through the opposition defence to make it 19-5 at half-time.

Ystalyfera kicked off for the second half scoring an unconverted try, which brought them back into the game at 19-10.

Captain Adam Ball rallied the team by scoring the next unconverted try, after which the Tenby forwards again took control of the match.

Wing forward Nick Drewitt scored a fine unconverted try from 50 yards, while Adam Ball followed with a second try from a five-metre scrum. The last try of the morning for Tenby came from Ben Field-Thomas, who, showing his footballing skills, kicked on from 40 yards and drove over the line, scoring a fine unconverted try.

Ystalyfera kept their heads up and their inside centre, who had a cracking game, scored a last unconverted try to make the final score 39-15.

The whole team must be praised for this excellent performance.

Congratulations to Gareth Merriman on his first game for the Swifts.
