April and May are the months when many qualifying rounds are played for national and international competitions. The next rounds are usually in Wales, but with the added bait of possible finals at Wentworth or even Sun City, the entries have been quite promising, to say the least.
The weather for the WLGU Australian Spoons was very good and the fast conditions of the course made scoring comparatively easy. Pat Fox and Liz Storey came in with an excellent 38 points and they qualify to play at Clyne ahead of Pam Cole and Linzi Hawkey on 35.
The Silver and Bronze Challenge Bowl qualifying rounds were again played when the course and the weather were benign. In the Silver Division, Gillian Roberts put in an excellent nett 68, with Pam Cole on 69. In the Bronze Division, Jean Charnock was on 70 and just pipped Linzi Hawkey on the back nine, so Gillian and Jean will join Anne Morris and Ann Dassen who were the Silver and Bronze LGU Medal winners for 2002/2003 at Langland Bay for the area finals in June.
The weather continued to be kind for the April LGU.Medal. In the Silver Division, Barbara Shaw had a nett 69 and Anne Morris nett 73, while in the Bronze Division Rita Collins also had a nett 69 and Jean Charnock a nett 70.
An error by Barbara Shaw and Anita Davies meant that Anita's superb nett 64 was disqualified from the Medal competition, but the score still counted for handicap reduction. So, beware that you always check each hole's score, not just the total for the round.
The lovely weather for weeks and weeks came to a very damp end for the first Hill-Lowe Bogey, so no-one played. Never mind, there are five more to go.
On May 1, the LGU Coronation Foursomes qualifying round was played and the fine weather had returned. Sue Griffiths and Liz Storey qualified for the South Wales area final at Fairwood Park in June with nett 73, just ahead of Ann Dassen and Barbara Shaw on 73.5. This competition is now sponsored by Peugeot - it will be interesting to see what prizes are on offer!
Finally, on May 2, at Tenby, the sibling partnership of Vena Davies and Nesta Hart won their first round match against Carmarthen in the West Wales Jubilee Foursomes Trophy by an impressive 6 and 5. Well done, we look forward to continued success in succeeding rounds.
