The scene through the clubhouse window on Sunday morning could have been taken from the film set of Scott's intrepid trip to the South Pole. The fairways and surrounding countryside were bathed in a sea of crystal frost glistening in the morning sunshine.
A little practise in the designated area revealed that the ground was as hard as concrete, which was a good indicator that the lies would be tight. Thank heavens for preferred lies.
But it takes more than a bit of cold to stop the Rabbits venturing out into what turned out to be a beautiful morning. By the time the first pair reached the fifth, the suns rays had started to melt the ice and normal play started to resume.
League leaders Fred and Bill were first off the tee with Jonathan and Ben. Ben, this newcomer to the Rabbits, hits a mean iron off the tee and they were three up by the third. Hard graft eventually saw Fred and Bill take the game four and three.
Next saw Peter Watkins and Steve Harries up against Tom McClean and Brian Dooley, who halved what must have been a closely contested match.
What happened next was unbelievable... second placed Smith and Greenwood failed to turn up for their match against Davies and Moran. I thought the Chicken trot was on a Saturday?
Farley and French were the next to draw blood by wrapping up their game four and three against Pegg and Thomas.
Steady Steve and John managed to mark up their sixth victory of the winter by beating Phil Marsden and Dave Lemon two and one, which must have been a close game taking this foursome over the GWR track to the views of Kiln Park. Dave Lemon kindly subbed for John Murphy who was struggling with the refurb' of Tenby Post Office.
Meurig Jones, who subbed for Steve Price, and Phillip Watkins beat Dave Morgan and Mike Munroe three and two. As Mike Munroe said back at the clubhouse, "I felt sorry for them and gave them the match". Mike's a hell of a nice guy... well you don't become an extra Rabbit for nothing, but I think this is taking things a bit too far, Mike!
The penultimate game saw Richard Caley and Jason Rolfe beat Steve Watkins and Anthony Allen three and one. Finally, John Cook and Chris Smith beat captain Ron and Paul James three and two.
The position at the bottom of the league table is throwing up more interest at this stage than that at the top. One point separating the bottom four teams and with only six games left to play will make Steve Price's bet on the wooden spoon more of a lottery.
