On Sunday, June 8, the rearranged event was played. The original date for this event was May 25, but it had to be postponed due to the weather which was very poor on the day. But Sunday saw a change for the better, with bright blue sky and warm conditions. The Mathias Thomas Cup was presented to the club by Mrs. Joanne Haig (nee Mathias Thomas), and is in the shape of a claret jug, very similar to the Open Championship trophy. The effect of the rearranged date may explain the lower than normal turnout, as only nine pairs took to the field. We did have one very late withdrawal due to a gardening accident, we hope he is recovering well. Again we had no twos recorded; maybe we will have to make the hole a great deal larger, still money will roll over to the next silverware event. The bag draw which does require a lot of skill, or should that be luck, was picked up by Pam Cole, with Steve Cole, also Eiona Aston with Geoff Aston. The eventual trophy winner was Gill Roberts with Allan Morton, followed by Anita Davies with Jim Taylor with a better back nine, from two others pairs on the same net score. The cup was presented by club captain Bryn Rowell who showed again his commitment to the club events as he with Mary turned out to play, even after a very busy last week with TGC Open Week events. The next mixed event will be the Sam Ackerman on Friday, June 20, at 4 pm. The draw for partners will be done on Wednesday, June 18, with the list closing on June 17.
