A dry and wind free Saturday morning meant that the golf swings could be analysed and improved without any hassle. Three groups were given the opportunity to practice their long game, their chipping and their putting.
Gavin and Simon were impressed with the standard of golf and many could reach the target of the umbrellas. The group were given the challenge to aim 50 yards away and land the ball in between the two umbrellas. Elliot Scotcher and Ollie Worley achieved this with ease, as did Shelby Rossiter.
On this occasion it was only practice, but will be tested soon for their Golf Foundation.
After practising, the juniors then played a team competition, with the scores being extremely close. Jack Hawkey, Elliot Scotcher, Toby Rossiter, Shelby Rossiter and Rosie Rees were the overall winners, but Ollie was the overall individual winner.
Ian was out of pocket by the end of his session, promising Mars bars for those who had a hole in one in the chipping! Both Luke Rees and Adam North provided the shots and earned themselves a snack!
Meredith Davies scored well individually, as did Leo Moreland, Joe Worley and Jack Davies. By the end of the morning, they all demonstrated their knowledge and know-how of how to make that perfect chip shot!
In the putting, Mary and Gill had them learning all about the rules of the green, tending the flag, marking the ball and knowing the line of the putt as well as the stroke of the putt.
After practice and tuition, both groups entered a team competition, with Rhianna Davies, Georgia Williams, Lewis Butler, Freya Knibb, Robyn Knibb and Oliver Parsons being the overall winners, but with only two points in it.
Congratulations to all those who took part. Practise those putting strokes on your carpet and you'll soon get the feel of it - a game of golf can be won or lost on just one putt!
The second group had some new faces, with four boys travelling down from Caerphilly to join us! They have just started and proved to be good golfers, hitting the ball well and rising to the challenge.
It was also great to see Harrison Sharma back again, and despite his long rest, proved he could still hit a ball well.
The group were given the opportunity to practice their long game and their chipping. The session ended with a team competition and super sub Sam Morgan helped the winning team of Matthew Jones, Jack Merrony and Georgia Thomas.
After round two, second, third and fourth positions changed rapidly, with Lewis Hurlow, Katy Reese, Garin, and Harrison Sharma sharing second place with Charles Upham, Anne-Marie Dassen, Evan Thomas and Aled.
Ian helped out one team, but I'm afraid his efforts meant that they finished third overall. Dan Worley, Owen and Claudette Pouton will be available next week Ian for lessons!
Congratulations to Oliver Duckett and Dan Cope who a fortnight ago travelled to mid Wales to play in the Central Wales stroke play competition. Dan finished middle of the field, Oliver came sixth overall and was hoping to be chosen for the Welsh squad, but just missed out due to some dubious selection!
Congratulations to Holly Watkins as well. She has made it into the Ladies Glamorgan team to play against the professionals at St. Mellons. She travelled south last weekend and, surrounded by selectors from the Welsh team, she will be representing Glamorgan along with three other girls who are regular members of the Welsh team. An excellent achievement for someone so young. She has qualified as a country member of Pyle and Kenfig, and we all wish her the very best for next weekend.
On Sunday, two girls braved the elements and played a few holes. Both played really well despite the conditions - prizes can be collected next week!
