A year of fundraising at Tenby Golf Club has raised an enormous £1,500 for Alzheimer's Research UK, the UK's leading dementia research charity.

The huge sum was raised by the club's ladies' section through a range of fundraising events that included a Boxing Day Swim and a Battle of the Brains quiz night.

Anita Davies, whose mother died with dementia, chose to support Alzheimer's Research UK during her year as ladies' captain at the club.

Over the months, she and her fellow golfers swung into action with a host of fundraising events - organising bucket collections, golfing contests and a raffle to reach their grand total.

One challenge even saw Anita and her daughter, Louise Harvey, brave the icy sea in December for the annual Big Red Boxing Day Swim.

Mrs. Davies said: "We've had a fantastic year and some really memorable events raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK. All the ladies put in a tremendous effort over the year, and I'm incredibly proud that between us we raised so much for dementia research.

"I chose Alzheimer's Research UK as our charity because dementia is something that affects so many people, and I would dearly love to see a cure.

"We found that people were very supportive of the cause because they could all relate to it - everyone knows someone with dementia. Despite this, dementia research is hugely underfunded, so I'm very pleased to know that the money we've raised will make a difference."

Miranda Mays, community fundraising manager at Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "This is a wonderful result, and we can't thank Anita and her club enough. The money they've raised will pay for hours of pioneering research to find preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia. In Wales alone, we're currently funding £1m of research at Cardiff University, and that's only made possible by fundraising efforts like this.

"There are currently more than 37,000 people living with dementia in Wales, and that number will soar as our population ages. We urgently need to invest in research to defeat dementia, and to do that, we rely on the support of people like the ladies at Tenby Golf Club."
