There were no competitions at Tenby Golf Club last weekend. Tenby's scheduled mixed match at Ashburnham was also called off on Sunday due to the adverse weather conditions. A busy couple of days is in store this weekend, however, with the highlight being the club's strokeplay championship for the Cobb Cup (best gross) and Regimental Bowl (nett). This is a 36-hole competition and as a result the course will be closed on the day. It will re-open on Sunday, however, when the Rabbits Section take on the talented Juniors in their annual clash. Players, meanwhile, are asked to take note that the Tipton Cup, due to be played on Wednesday, May 23, has now been postponed to the following week, Wednesday, May 30. This has a shotgun start at 5.30 pm. Finally, apologies are offered for any confusion caused by last week's report. The monthly medal was combined with a qualifier for the Welsh individual championship, not the Welsh team qualifier. Qualifying were Chris Hughes in Category A and J. Howard Griffiths in Category B. It is hoped that the others named were not too disappointed.
Ladies' Section
he first of the six annual Hill-Lowe Bogey competitions was played at the beginning of April on a warm gentle day and the three best scores of the day were produced by Holly Watkins, Helen Morgan and Barbara Williams, all on -1. During April there are always several qualifying competitions for events run by the LGU or the WUG. The first of these was a medal round for the Challenge Bowls area final which will be played at Builth in August. The leading players in the Silver Division were Heather Morgan and Gillian Roberts and in the Bronze, Mary Lewis and Pat Fox. The other qualifying events were both foursomes. First, for the Australian Spoons, to be played at Gower in July, the best score was produced by Anita Davies and Denise Edwards, with Linda Thomas and Barbara Morris a close second. Secondly, the Coronation Foursomes, to be played at Cottrell Park in August, and the best round was produced by Heather Morgan and Rhian Walters, with Anita Davies and Denise Edwards coming second. The weather for the April medal was benign, as it seemed to be throughout April, and the scoring was steady, with Holly Watkins winning the Silver Division on nett 70, followed by Sue Griffiths on nett 71. In the Bronze Division, Ann Marsden produced a nett 72 and Anne Wilks 73. For many years, the WLGU had a foursomes competition, running for six months of the year - the Jubilee Foursomes -but gradually over the years enthusiasm for this format waned and the competition has been revamped as Jubilee Threes in which the two best Stableford scores of three are recorded at each hole. The first scheduled round was played at the beginning of May and an excellent score of 85 points was recorded by Joan Pugh, Mary Williams and Mary Rowell. Joan played her socks off and the two Marys only wished they could have given her more sustained support. Ann Follon, Penny Cope and Mair Evans scored 77 and realised they had left several points on the course.
BERYL OLIVER
Finally, we were all saddened to hear of the death of Beryl Oliver last week, after a very short illness. Beryl had been a member of Tenby for some 20 years, having retired here with her late husband, John, from Aberdare. She participated actively in the club, serving on the management committee, the ladies' committee and as ladies' captain in 2002. We will all miss her dry wit and willingness to help anyone with a problem - she was a good friend. B.M.S.
