On Wednesday, May 26, Tenby Golf Club hosted the first GolfAbility Charity competition to be held at the club - to explain, this is in support of the Leonard Cheshire Disability which looks after the really severely disabled people, many disabled mentally through accident or at birth.
These people would be totally helpless without the support of the Leonard Cheshire Charity, started by the famous Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC OM DSO** DFC*. I know many members of Tenby GC have been to the local home and seen many of the heart-breaking cases they look after.
The Leonard Cheshire Disability can't cure these people, but they do give them an enormous amount of support to try and give them sort of feeling and purpose of life.
These are the quotes from some famous golfers:
Rory McIlroy - "Make Leonard Cheshire Disability's GolfAbility competition your club's flagship fund-raising event of the year."
Louis Oosthuizen - "I'm supporting Leonard Cheshire Disability's charity golf competition, GolfAbility. Ask your club to sign up and take part, to help raise funds for the charity's work supporting tens of thousands of disabled people in the UK."
David Howell - "If you enjoy the game of golf, there is no better way to raise funds for charity than getting out for some friendly competition on the course. Ask your club to sign up to GolfAbility and help raise funds for Leonard Cheshire Disability."
As a result we decided to support them via this competition. In addition to this and to generate additional funds for this cause, I decided to walk and play as many holes as I could. This was not easy for me, but with the thought that for every hole I managed I would get 50p per hole towards the charity spurred me on. In the end I managed to do 10 holes.
I was immensely proud of the support I got and thank everyone from the bottom of my heart who donated towards this very worthy cause. To date, we have managed to raise over £550.
I would like to give special thanks to the members of the Seniors Section of Tenby Golf Club who have generously donated £100 to the charity. For anyone who was not aware of the sponsorship, it is still open and if you wish to support this charity, you can, by sending your donation or take it in person to the pro-shop at Tenby Golf Club; even 50p will be gratefully received.
Forty-one golfers took part and their entire entrance fee went to the charity. I was very grateful to Tenby Golf Club for donating half the fees from the buggies taken out by competitors. Also, to Rhys Harry and his staff for all the support they gave. My biggest thanks go to all the golfers who played and supported the event.
Results: winner - Barrie Frayne 39 pts; 2. Philip Mumford 39 (countback); 3. Harri Jaakola 37.
As the winner, Barrie earns himself a voucher for four people, plus buggies, to play three days golf at Antequara Golf Course in Malaga, Spain. On top of this, he will be entered into a draw, where 60 winning players will be drawn to play the grand finale at The Marriot Forest of Arden Golf Course on September 6. All the very best of luck Barrie.
I wish to thank everyone who has supported this event and those who kindly donated to the sponsorship.
I know the charity will be very pleased with all the monies subscribed, with the beneficiaries getting the support they so richly deserved.

Ladies' Section
We have all waited for a bus for ages and then two came together and apparently this now applies to holes-in-one in the Ladies' section. Isabel Kent's hole-in-one in a mixed foursome was reported last week and a few days earlier Gillian Roberts achieved the same result at the same hole, the 17th. Well done both of you.
Last week, the Three Counties team entertained Haverfordwest, who arrived with their strongest team. Tenby did their utmost to win, but an international and another Haverfordwest player chipping in three times were too much and Tenby lost 3 and 2. They play Trefloyne away next.
The May weather was not exactly Spring-like, but it did improve and the Thursday results have reflected this.
At the beginning of the month, Rita Collins and Marion Clarke qualified for the next round of the Coronation Foursomes, with Anita Davies and Anne Wilks second.
The Jubilee Threes' six-month season has arrived and the first Thursday fixture for this enjoyable national competition produced some very good results. Both teams of Heather Morgan, Mel Smith and Barbara Williams and Anita Davies, Ruth Goldwait and Paula Morgan amassed 79 points, but they were just pipped by Toni Lucas, Helen Morgan and Annette Flower on 81, which could be in the running eventually.
The May GUW Medal was also combined with the Rhian Pearn qualifing round and both were won with an excellent round of nett 70 by Ruth Goldwait, with Maura Rimell runner-up. Ruth will be representing Tenby at Neath on August 24 and we wish her a successful day.
The final competition for May was the third Hill-Lowe Bogey and scores reflected the excellent condition of the course and also the play of Judy Lewis and Rita Collins on +2, Pam Cole on +1 and Anne Morris on -1.
Next week is Open Week. Fingers crossed for similar weather to last year as we welcome a very large entry and we wish everyone taking part an enjoyable and successful week. The organising team for this long running event always work extremely hard and they, too, deserve an enjoyable and successful week.
