A fair amount to report from the seniors' third qualifying Stableford eclectic competition on Tuesday. On a chilly but thankfully dry day, 33 players played the links with varying levels of success.
The morning didn't begin well; Geoff Aston was an early starter who after completing the first hole was obviously a little under the weather. His concerned playing partners, Captain Jim and Hywel Probert, buggied him back to the clubhouse, where an ambulance was summoned and Geoff was whisked away to Haverfordwest for tests and subsequent treatment. Let's hope that he is back in tiptop condition very soon.
Another sad tale of adversity centres around Owen Monaghan, who, having damaged his wrist playing table-tennis with a grandchild, has had to lay off golf for a couple of weeks. Making a grand return to the links, he soon discovered that he wasn't yet fit to play. Determined not to waste his entrance fee and buggy hire outlay, he battled on, only to 'blob' the last 12 holes -probably a course record!
Out on the course things were happening. Shot of the day was from Peter Hart, whose third shot on the fourth flew sweetly over the hill and straight into the hole - 3 for 2 for four points - Seemples!
Shout of the day was delivered by Captain Jim to Robin Hagley, Tony Ranoe and the aforementioned Peter Hart. They were berated for slow play! The words kettle, pot and black spring immediately to mind!
Everyone agreed that the new bunkers were an excellent idea and that their positioning was an act of inspiration. Players were quite sad to see that the hazards were still classed as GUR and they were not able to test their skills by extracting themselves from the sand.
Back in the clubhouse, cards checked and scores recorded, the results were:
In third place with an enviable 39 points was our secretary Jeff BanfieldwithanN (I finally got it right Jeff).
Second, with a score of 40 points, which absolutely amazed him, was Doug Havard.
In first place, also with an excellent 40 points, but scoring rather better on the back nine was Mel Neale.
Congratulations to all three of these high scoring seniors, and also to Des Stone, Allen Watts and Rod Clarke, who scored twos.
The winner of last week's bonus ball charity raffle was Allen Watts, who very generously sponsored this week's raffle. Brian Morgan, as usual, pursued the sale of raffle tickets with vigour, dedication and perhaps just a smidgeon of smiling intimidation.
Captain Jim and Brian made a presentation to the Lifeline charity for the children of Chernobyl. Due to technical problems I will have to hold the full details of this event over to next week.
And so another Tuesday bites the dust. Please remember the forthcoming social events and do keep an eye on the web site.
There is still some great golf to be played before Christmas!
See you there
