Busy time for juniors

The last few weeks have been a busy time for the juniors,, with many competitions being played.

The first was the Dyfed Boys v Dyfed Girls at Ashburnham. The format was stableford matchplay, with the the girls team including Sophie Lovatt, who won her game against Henrik Jaakola.

Megan Guerreiro played Jack Harries, with Jack being the winner, while Billy Truman and Luke Harries also won their games, with the final score being 5-2 to the Dyfed Boys.

While that was taking place, Olivia Bradbury along with Matthew and David Webb and their parents went on tour to Bristol to play two junior competitions. Unfortunately, due to the poor weather conditions, only one day of golf was played at Shirehampton Park Golf Club. It was a glorious sunny day once the mist had cleared. All three competitors from Tenby enjoyed a good round of golf and meeting new and familiar faces.

The Noyce Cup winners competition was played on October 30. Ryan Dennehy won the yellow box section, with Ben Sheldon close behind him in second place.

The white box saw a close match between Billy Truman and Matthew Webb, both with 36 points, but Billy winning after countback, while Jack Harries took third place with 28 points.

Off the red box, Sophie Lovatt had 37 points, Megan Guerreiro was second with 28 and Olivia Bradbury third with 25.

The overall winner was Sophie Lovatt - well done!

Last Sunday, on a cold, but sunny day, it was the monthly medal and the girls were playing the Jones Lewis Championship, in which Olivia Bradbury came first with an 83, winning the girls medal and championship.

The white tee medal was won by Billy Truman with a score of 70 , while Jack Harries took second place with 74. Off the yellow tees, Nathaniel John came first with an 86, followed by Aaron Lloyd with 92.

The last medal of the year is on December 4, while there are also a few more cups to be played for prior to the Junior Dinner and Presentation on Friday, December 9. Letters will be sent out shortly to all members.

This Sunday (November 13), the Argent Cup is being played, which is an adult and junior competition. We hope you will put your names down on the list in the club or contact Ian Thomas by today (Friday). This year there will be food and a short presentation after the competition. Please turn up before 10.30 on the morning.

Another note for your diaries is November 20, at 10.24, when the David Hughes Cup will be played.

Rabbits receive captain's warning!

With your Scribe having been laid low with a heavy cold and the knowledge that he and his partner Paul Davies had been awarded a walkover against Pete T and Mike Munro, it left only three matches out on the course on what was a gorgeous sunny day and ideal conditions for golf.

The tee-off order was slightly disrupted due to some late arrivals - a captain's warning to them both. Mind you, after reliving his youth at the DeValence the previous night, it was with surprise that Tim made it to the first tee.

Anyway, on to the golf. With Bob Flower discovering his game (putting like a demon, so I was told), he and partner Phil Carpenter ran out winners against Mark Edds and Chris Smith by 4 and 2 - nearly the same score as Blackpool against Leeds, eh Chris!

The captain was carried around the course by his clear-headed partner Mackie to record a win over Tony Morris and Rees Davies 2 and 1. Meanwhile, the bookies' favourites Bill Davies and Steve Cole claimed a 4 and 2 victory over the latecomers, Steve Watkins and Robin Bradbury (oops, I didn't mean to name you)

On to next Sunday and round three. Let's hope for the same weather and please be on time to save our captain from worrying.

Last Sunday's results: Paul Davies and Mick Gillet w/o Peter Turton and Mike Munro; Bill Davies and Steve Cole bt Steve Watkins and Robin Bradbury 4 and 2; Tim Davies and Mackie Harts bt Tony Morris and Richard Prout 2 and 1; Phil Carpenter and Bob Flower bt Mark Edwards and Chris Smith 4 and 2.

Subs: Rees Davies for Richard Prout.

Plenty of fireworks in monthly medal

There were glorious conditions for the monthly medal on Saturday and, being November 5, it was not surprising that there were plenty of fireworks too - particularly in division one.

Leading the field home was John Gottwaltz, who blasted his way to a sparkling nett 70, but there was a fierce battle for the minor placings, with no fewer than four players tying on 71 and needing a protracted countback to separate them.

It was slightly more clear cut in division two, although medal winner Ross James, who posted a nett 73, only squeezed home by one shot over his nearest rival David Skyrme in second place.

Leading scores and prize winners were as follows:

Division One: 1. John Gottwaltz 75-5-70 (medal plus £42.50); 2. Chris Hughes 80-9-71, after countback (£31); 3. Neil Lovatt 80-9-71, after countback (£20); 4. Jerry Whitehouse 84-13-71, after countback (£11); 5. Brian Cramb 74-3-71 (£6).

Division Two: 1. Ross James 95-22-73 (medal plus £42.50); 2. David Skyrme 92-18-74 (£31); 3. Denis Slyne 93-17-76 (£20); 4. Juan Cruz 97-21-76 (£11); 5. Austin Davies 93-16-77 (£6).

Twos: John Gottwaltz, Mark Griffiths, Richard Ormond, Gary McNeilly, Jeffrey Banfield, Mike Brew, Jeffrey Haley (£13.10 each).

Bag draw: D. Henry, P. Jenkins, R. Rossiter, R. James, R. Morton, P. Goodridge (£14.50 each).

Pro Shop draw: J. Cruz and K. Gouldsbrough (Ashworth shirt each).

Handicap changes: Chris Hughes 9 to 8; Richard Ormond 13 to 12; Neil Lovatt 9 to 8; David Henry 16 to 17; Roger Schofield 15 to 16; Terry Davies 18 to 19; Geoffrey Aston 14 to 15.

Winter rules - OK!

In complete contrast to last week's sunshine, Tuesday was grey, drizzly and even quite breezy. Not deterred by the conditions, a field of 39 seniors competed in a Stableford Four Ball non-qualifying competition, which started from the first and 15th tees.

When the last players were in and everybody had been duly relieved of their raffle cash by the charity supremo, Brian Morgan, the scores were announced by Captain Jim.

With an excellent 39 points, the in-form Bob Howse claimed the glory and the £12 first prize.

John Hayhoe snatched second spot with a creditable 36 points, earning £9 - which added up to a nett £40 loss when Eve Hayhoe, who had come to collect him, found an unmissable £49 bargain in the Pro Shop.

No such problem for Peter Williams, who carded an admirable 35 points to have third place - and £5 - all to himself.

It should be noted that the greens had been tined before play, and while Chris and his merry groundsmen had rolled the surfaces, putting was more difficult than normal.

One solitary hole in two was recorded from 117 tee shots on the three par three holes. Well, not quite true, because Mike Fox actually sank his second shot on hole 13 - straight into the cup on the temporary green! Sadly, the proper hole was in play, so the smile was rapidly wiped from his face!

Bob Howse did it properly, second shot into the correct hole at the sixth, making him the recipient of a further £3, not a bad day at the office!

On the subject of money - put your hands together for John Hall, who won last week's charity raffle with his own personal lucky number - 43

A happy event in the clubhouse was a welcome visit from Jack Hasdall. Jack has been fighting a difficult - but successful - battle against illness, and it was a real pleasure to see him back.

Captain Jim announced that after some serious investigation by Jeff Bamfield, the Gower Golf Club was the suggested venue for the next Away Day. A show of hands supported this location, so start saving your pocket money and mark May 22 on your calendar.

Finally, next Tuesday we shall be hopefully lowering our shots per hole in a qualifying eclectic. The start sheet is on the board and on the seniors' website.

See you there!
