One more stableford competition will bring an end to the Seniors' eclectic competition for another year. During the Winter, beset with cancellations due to the weather, a number of new names have appeared on the winners list, most notably that of Robin Hagley alongside Paul Nixon.
A more recent recruit has also shown his mettle in the few competitions he has played. Peter Hart was in the reckoning again this week scoring a consistent 35 and must have enhanced his chances of appearing in the upper end of the final list.
This week it was one of the established members who re-established his reputation with a score in excess of 40 points playing off a handicap of 10. The early scores were quite modest considering the sunny, mild conditions. The conditions were good, but not before the frost had cleared from the fairways and greens.
As the early players entered their scores they were in the low 30s and late 20s. Amongst those Robin Hagley carded a modest 31 to be the first leader in the clubhouse. He was followed by John Cook, Brian Waters and Newman Vincent on 30. Behind them were a group of seven making 29 points. Then the big guns began to appear.
Next to become leader in the clubhouse was John Hall on 33 and he remained there for a long time to be joined by Mike Fox and Bob Wiseman.
On the fifth hole, David Lamb was joined in the 'captain's bunker' by 'uncle' Jim Taylor and suggested that they both made a contribution to the captain's charity. One of them dropped 50p in the bottle, but I don't know which one. David failed to achieve another best performance, not scoring on five holes on the back nine in a round of 24.
Malcolm Arlott was a mighty relieved man as he handed in his card. Not playing to his potential of late, he harboured thoughts of receiving the booby. He knew that wasn't to be since he marked a card with a lower score than his.
John Cook's score improved dramatically after the 14th. As he and his entourage were nearing the green they watched, with great admiration, a young lady wiggle her hips in preparation for her drive off the third. Rejuvenated and galvanised into action, John proceeded to score well on the rest of the holes on his way in. According to Brian Morgan, he scored three points on three of the last four holes, with a four points on the other.
The odd thing was that it had an adverse effect on Nigel Rimell as he proceeded to fire his ball into the rough grass. Brian Morgan is still scratching his head!
Fred Adlam's score was quite presentable, he finished with a creditable 32. He was as surprised as anyone since after seven holes he had 17 points, while after 12 holes he had advanced to 19 points. Something happened in the middle of the course.
The 33 barrier was beaten when Peter Hart handed in his card with a consistent 35 and then that was overtaken by Dudley Williams with 36.
To cap that, Stan Hudson confirmed the whisperings that preceded him with a magnificent 42 points.
Showing a great return to form, and earning a place on the leader board, Stan submitted a card that had four birdies and eight pars. However, there was no two and he had a six on the second for 'nil point.'
This week, the booby prize went to Ray Ford for his magnificent 14. Perhaps he had played for it since Dai Thomas claims that when he went to play the golf video someone had replaced it with a porno film! Was it you Dai?
Brian Morgan's raffle raised £44 for charity this week, with Colin Griffith and Ken Gouldsbrough receiving the prizes.
Harts and Hewitt secure winter league with ease
With one match to spare, vice-captain Mackie Harts and his partner Gerald Hewitt have secured the Rabbits Winter League title and congratulations to them both for a fine campaign.
It was not quite what they were hoping for, though, which was an unbeaten campaign, as last weekend they lost for the first time this season, courtesy of a fine performance from Kevin Smith and Chris Davies, who have left themselves in with a chance of some silverware.
With the minor places still up for grabs, it's going to be the usual hectic Sunday for several pairs, if all results go the right way, or wrong way, depending on who you are.
Mind you, it's probably a good job that Mackie and Gerald didn't need to win another match. Apparently Gerald played like a fool and making the decision to wear his contacts didn't help, thus ensuring he made a complete mess of three easy putts - not like this man, Look out this weekend if you're up against these, no doubt they will wallop who they play.
Another pairing to watch out for in the final week, amongst others, is that of Jerry Whitehouse and Mick Munro; they play with such swagger that Mick can afford the luxury of smacking a drive and then spend time fine tuning his air shot.
Mind you, there is a rumour that Jerry and Mick have been seen tampering with Mick's trolley and that, just when someone is about to take a shot, the said trolley inexplicably takes off, thus putting the said golfer of their stroke. But, just like the famous Chuckle Brothers, it happens on their own shots too, me to you, to me. Watch out, though, this week their dastardly plan might work
Finally, can someone help our very own new grandad, Mike Hale. It seems he is confusing a perfect shot with a thin one. Tony Morris assures me he played a majestic shot on the ninth, but was it? Not according to Mike, it wasn't, but then Mike's obviously so overjoyed at his new grandchild, it's clouding his mind.
This week he even addressed his ball on the putting surface with his putter cover on - what a numpty.
So, as said, just one match to go to decide the last places at the top and bottom. Should be interesting and if you are likely to be involved, you had better warn her indoors you might be a bit late for your Aunt Bessie's and beef.
Please also note that the next fixture in the calendar is the Dilwater Cup. This is on March 21 and is open to all subs and regular winter league players, who will be presumed to be playing unless they tell Mackie otherwise.
Last Sunday's results: T. Morris and P. Davies bt M. Hale and S. Maytum 2 and 1; J. Whitehouse and M. Munro bt S. Watkins and J. Murphy 1 up; C. Davies and K. Smith bt G. Hewitt and M. Close, but not close enough!
Fifteen Chicken Trotters left the hutch for their weekly outing on the Tenby links last Friday morning.
Leading the brood home to claim top perch was Rick Lewis, who carded a useful score of 29 points.
And that was two more than his nearest rival, Mike Fox, who claimed second spot.
Left spitting feathers again, though, was that man Richard Morgan. For the umpteenth time this season, he just missed out on the prizes, his 25 points coming close, but not close enough.
Mind you, one man who would have been more than happy to have returned such a score was Derek Bath. He has featured many times among the 'prize' winners... booby prize winners that it is.
And he was at it again on Friday, holding up the rest with his ?? points.
Par for the day was 23, with results being as follows: 1. Rick Lewis 29 pts (£1.50); 2. Mike Fox 27 (90p). Booby - Derek Bath (30p entry fee returned. There were no twos.
Junior golf
The winner of the red box stableford this week was Bethany Morris, while winner off the yellow box was Sam Jaakola.
This Sunday, we are playing for the Southcliffe Trophy, which is 18 holes of bogey golf off all tees. Please arrive by 10.15 so we can sort out the pairings.
