The popularity of the mixed competitions continues to grow and grow. A total of 26 couples had signed-up to play in the Usher Cup 2009 on Sunday and extra tee times had to be given.

During the week the forecast was doubtful, but on Saturday evening the BBC website assured that there would be a window of sunshine between 12 noon and 4 pm. They got it wrong.

Well done to the 19 brave couples who decided to go out and play regardless. We all agreed we had played in worse conditions! It was more 'spiders and ants' than 'cats and dogs', but certainly wetting and definitely windy. The scores reflected the conditions.

A special mention must go to Anne Wilks and Bill Beynon who went out on their own. However, it was not the weather to have to wait on every tee so they walked in off the 10th.

I think Jean Charnock got the sport wrong as she looked dressed for ski-ing in her rather fetching bobble hat. Word has it she even tried to ski down the bank of the 12th, but ended in a belly flop! It was wet enough for swimming Jean!

All was saved when they heard they were winners of the bag draw though, along with Geoff and Eiona Aston. The money winners today were Sophie Lovatt and her grandad Neil, who had the only two, so winning a voucher for £19. Well done Sophie, you had to putt it in!

So to the competition itself. Mervyn Tucker told us a lovely story about Walt and Cathleen Usher who donated this cup. Then ladies captain Heather K. Morgan related how Mervyn had won this cup in 1993 with her daughter Katie, and in 2005 with herself.

Just beaten into third place on the back nine were Toni Lucas and Dave Blackmore, by Jean and John Charnock in second place. Both had 29 points. First with 31 points, and winners of this year's Usher Cup, were John Hancock and Sue Griffiths.

Sunday really brought it home to us all how lucky we are with Tenby golf course, because, even though we had had so much rain, it had all soaked away and the course was playable. We were also treated to a lovely meal with Steve in the clubhouse afterwards. All agreed it had been well worth braving the weather!

The next mixed event is the new Morgan Tucker Greensomes Trophy on Sunday, August 16, then the Friendly Foursomes on Friday evening, August 21. Sign-up sheets will be on the mixed noticeboard in the back foyer.

Bright and breezy for monthly medal

The July monthly medal was held on Saturday in bright and breezy conditions. And with the rough tough, scoring was always going to be difficult. In fact, for some it was just too difficult, as no fewer than 38 of the 97 competitors failed to get their cards round.

Not that it was a problem for Nick Thomas and Terry Davies, though, as they won the medals in their respective divisions, six-handicapper Thomas returning a useful nett 70 in division one, while Davies produced the best nett of the day, a 69 off his 26 handicap, to top division two.

Leading scores and prize winners were as follows:

Division One (38 competitors): Nick Thomas 76-6-70 (medal plus £33.50); Andrew Morton 86-9-71, last nine (£25); Chris Hughes 80-9-71 (£16.50); Simon Rossiter 78-6-72 (£8.50).

Division Two (59 competitors): Terry Davies 95-26-69 (medal plus £33.50); Idwal David 88-13-75, last nine (£25); Rob Hall 89-14-75 (£16.50); Phillip Keating 90-13-77 (£8.50).

Twos: Steven Amos, Jon Bolter, Robert Brown, Terry Davies, Philip Goodridge Mark Griffiths, Paul Heywood, Gary McNeilly, Richard Morton, Colin Murphy, Andrew Pouton, David Schooling, Michael Schooling (£7.53 each).

Bag draw: M. Williams, G.McNeilly, R.Hall, R. Stevenson, R. Hagley (£18.40 each).

Pro draw: C. Kaye (carry bag).

Handicap changes: Terry Davies 26 to 24; Tim Edwards 11 to 12; Chris Hughes 9 to 8; Gary McNeilly 9 to 10; Andrew Morton 9 to 8; Tony Rogers 20 to 21; Simon Rossiter 6 to 5; Ian Thomas 24 to 25; Nick Thomas 6 to 5.

Emma's Champion of Champions!

Members of Tenby Golf Club have been very proud to hear of the success of their very own Emma Guerreiro (pictured) who won the Champion of Champions at the Welsh Girls Championship in Holyhead on Monday, July 20.

Well done also to Georgia Thomas who qualified for the matchplay and reached her target of a handicap of seven. Both girls are a credit to the club - well done.
