The Tenby Rabbits Winter League campaign came to a conclusion last weekend and, despite all the possible outcomes going into the final round of games, in the end it was quite straightforward.

Before Sunday's matches it was really down to just two pairs to take top honours, either Chris Davies and Steve Watkins or Chris Smith and Jerry Whitehouse, both being on the same points at the start of the day.

The league was to be won by the pairing that picked up the only win and not as expected Chris Davies and Steve Watkins, who lost their game to Steve Cole (sub for Dave Morgan) and Juan Cruz 3 and 1.

This meant that if Chris Smith and Jerry Whitehouse could win their match, then the league was theirs. However, they were not to know this; they were still out on the course ensuring their two points and indeed they did, with a 6 and 5 win over Gerald Hewitt and John Murphy, this giving them top spot and the 2008-2009 winter league title.

Congratulations were extended to them by the captain, Mark Edwards, and vice-captain, Mick Gillet.

However, the fun didn't end there. When all matches had eventually finished, there was only one pairing in outright second, that of Mike Hale and Dorian Thomas - well done boys - with three others tied on 11 points, Dafydd Evans and Paul Davies, Terry Davies and John Hunt and Chris Davies and Steve Watkins.

This meant a sudden death play-off and, with the captain on hand to adjudicate, off they went up the first, while others sat back in the clubhouse waiting for what they expected to be an eternity. What happened was much shorter, with Dafydd Evans and Paul Davies winning the hole with a four and thus taking third place in the league - well done boys.

Even with so much at stake on the day, though, there was still time for the usual fun and games, and not least from the captain, who appeared to be practising for his audition in Mary Poppins, starting soon at Tonypandy theatre. Mind you, the way he chased Mick Gillet's brolly was more akin to a scene from Benny Hill - well, if the cap fits, eh Mark.

Unfortunately, there was also some upset on the day, which is very unusual for Rabbits golf, with Mike Hale upsetting Macky Harts - nothing to do with the golf, mind you, it was just the fact that he, Mike Hale, turned up!

There were also a couple of memory moments and both from the same pairing. Mick (the balls) Munro was seen on the first tee without a ball - although he did have the right glasses on this week - and just a hole later, his partner Fred Adlam walked up to the tee without a club. Maybe boys, just maybe, that's where you went wrong this year, eh?

Now, as you know, this column is always written on 100 per cent truth. However, this week, your correspondent is sad to reveal that he was told a whopper of a lie. When asking Macky Harts and Simon Evans if there was anything to report, the reply came, "No, we had the perfect game."

Don't think so boys. Firstly Rabbits don't play the perfect game, we leave that to the Divots, and secondly, if you were so good, then why didn't Simon's ball find the fairway on the eighth, eh?

Also, would the person who used Terry Davies's bottle of Horn aftershave, emptying it in the process, please refrain from doing so again - you wouldn't like it when he's angry and definitely when he's smelly and angry.

So there we have it, the end of another winter league, but don't forget, there's plenty coming up, including some Rabbits competitions, but mainly the Summer League campaign -check the noticeboard for these. Please let's all support Mark and Mick and, if we just go that bit extra, we can maybe win Pool A this year.

Sunday's results: Steve Cole (Dave Morgan) and Juan Cruz bt Chris Davies and Steve Watkins 3 and 1; John Hunt and Terry Davies bt Mark Edwards and Mick Gillet 2 up; Dafydd Evans and Paul Davies bt Fred Adlam and Mike Munro 8 and 7; Mike Hale & Robin Bradbury (Dorian Thomas) bt Simon Evans and Mackie Harts 2 and 1; Jerry Whitehouse and Chris Smith bt Gerald Hewitt and John Murphy 6 and 5.
