Ladies' Section
In 1970, Audrey Birt had the bright idea of taking the ladies of Tenby Golf Club away for a day's golf. She and Nancy Evans organised the day at Newport, Pembs., and thus began a tradition which has been maintained ever since.
Over the years we have visited nearly all the local clubs and even been as far away as Fairwood Park, but more often than not we have returned to Newport.
Many of us have visited Newport since the days of the Dietrich family and those members who had not seen the recent improvements to the clubhouse and the new nine holes were eager to do so.
It was a mizzly morning when we left Pembroke, but after assuring the bus driver that a Sat. Nav. for Newport, Gwent, would not be helpful, everyone arrived to find the weather much improved.
Despite very large black clouds sailing over the estuary, it did not rain and it was warm, with occasional glimpses of the sun, which did much to enhance the superb views from the new holes.
Most of us spent so much time admiring the view, our golf was not of a high standard, but a few managed to play reasonably well.
We had been nourished by bacon butties and coffee before play and, after a delicious evening meal, the prizes were presented by the captain, Nesta Hart.
Before the presentation, Nesta read a résumé of Audrey's life and her involvement in local organisations, as well as the golf club, which Giles, Audrey's youngest son, had produced. This and the photograph of Audrey were much appreciated by everyone.
Since Audrey's untimely death in 1971, her husband, Charles, and more recently their son, Giles, have provided beautiful prizes in memory of Audrey - many of us have lovely pieces of china won over the years. This year, Giles gave Portmeirion china, which was much-admired and will be treasured by the winners.
The prize winners were: 1. Jean Charnock 35 pts; 2. Mary Lewis 32; 3. Pam Cole 30.
Jo Walsh Morgan won the 36 handicappers prize with 27 points.
At the end of the presentation, Jean Charnock thanked Nesta very much for organising a day to remember in such beautiful surroundings.
PS. I travelled by car and I hope the bus eventually returned to Tenby with contented and replete passengers, without the aid of Sat. Nav!

Rabbits Society
Sunday saw a poor turnout of Rabbits for the much-anticipated Taffs v The Rest clash.
This, to be fair, was probably due to the horrendous weather forecast, although fortunately the predicted downpour did not materialise on the sun-drenched links at Tenby.
One surprise absentee was Terry Davies; I mean, this guy will play in thunderstorms, and it shows when he does go out on the course, for he has a great knack of keeping his ball below the wind - down to club control, apparently!
Eleven turned out, but with Steve Watkins not playing the first hole, it was just the 10 playing for the coveted silverware, and it was the Rest of the World that won.
If anyone wants to question this, then see this year's vice-captain and ex-copper (they never make things up) Mick Gillet!
Footnote: The B & H Cup has been moved forward to this Sunday, October 12. This competition is open to all Rabbits who have played at least one game in the Summer League and is a yellow box stableford.
Incidentally, Tenby Rabbits' final position in the Summer League campaign was third, so not a bad effort.
And finally, don't forget the annual general meeting this (Friday) evening at the clubhouse - please wear collar and tie.
Dyfed League
The Tenby DGU team travelled to play Rosemarket in the penultimate match of the season on Saturday, September 27.
Play on this occasion was not interrupted by the arrival or departure of the micro light aircraft which use this airfield.
Our hosts were very friendly and the hospitality was good.
Tenby had a very successful afternoon, winning six matches. This result ensures that we are top of Division Four of the league and will be promoted to Division Three next season.
I would like to thank very sincerely all members who have played in these matches.
The remaining match is away to Glyn Abbey.
