0645 on Sunday morning saw 72 golfers converge onto every tee on the course in eager anticipation of the klaxon which would signal the start of the 11th Phillip Booth Texas Scramble.

This is one of the most popular events in the TGC golfing calendar, with all 18 tees once again occupied by bright-eyed early starters. There are a number of theories as to its popularity:

1. It affords the players the chance to experience the unique camaradarie of the Texas scramble format.

2. Players can enjoy 18 holes of quality golf for a prestigious trophy, large prize fund and still be home by midday.

3. There is a free champagne breakfast after the round!

Whatever the reason, many thanks once again go to Phillip Booth who has generously sponsored the day since the inaugural event in 1998; it was greatly appreciated by all who participated.

When the klaxon did sound at 0700, there were in fact 71 competitors on the course and not 72. One competitor unfortunately had been taken ill on Saturday night and phoned the pro-shop at 0655 to register his malaise. Rhys telephoned super-sub Jim Moffat at home in New Hedges. Jim, who was wrapped up warm and cosy in bed, manfully responded to the call and within 15 minutes of his rude awakening, he was shaved, immaculately dressed and acquainted with his new teammates before they had reached their second green! A great effort Jim.

The course was in superb condition, and all the teams took advantage of a beautiful calm early morning to post some very low scores. This was followed in the clubhouse by a hearty full breakfast washed down by a glass (or two) of black velvet. Many thanks to Gary and Julia for providing the perfect ending to a great morning.
