The Llewellyn Thomas trophy, the only mixed Foursomes medal event on the Tenby Golf Club calendar, has been pocketed this year by Pam and Steve Cole, with a junior (albeit pretty grown-up juniors) partnership of Anne Marie Dassen and Dan Cope gaining a very satisfactory second place despite a limited number of shots. They had an excellent gross 38 on the first nine. It was good to see Liz and Bob Storey coming back to form with a score that would have won the competition if one of them had not fallen foul of the match and handicap committee rules. Result: Pam and Steve Cole gross 88, net 72; Anne Marie Dassen and Dan Cole gross 83, net 73.5. Twos: Sue Griffiths and John Hancock (2); Pam and Steve Cole; Rita Collins and Geoff Aston.

Friendly mixed foursomes

The draw for this 14-hole competition threw up a number of interesting pairs and a very enjoyable competition took place on a fine, dry evening, despite it being Friday the 13th! The scoring was solid rather than spectacular, with most pairs not making the most of the last five holes when they were, no doubt, losing concentration and thinking of the bar meal awaiting their return to the clubhouse. It was, therefore, a close encounter and one or two stewards' enquiries were being made over dinner, but seemed to evaporate as the intake of red wine increased. Result: 1. Lyn Bonar and Dave Moran 28 pts (last five); 2. Ann Dassen and Jim Taylor 28 pts.

Club report

Last Saturday was the major club competition, the Cobb Cup and Regimental Bowl. The Cobb Cup is for the best gross score over 36 holes and the Regimental Bowl is for the best net score over 36 holes. The morning started with a very stiff north-easterly wind which made it very difficult for the early starters. The weather improved in the afternoon. The course was tough, with fast greens and long rough. Both the best morning and afternoon gross rounds were played by John Morris with scores of 77 and 71, respectively. The best morning net score was by Dean Rossiter with a net 70 and the best afternoon net score by Martin Morris. John Morris won the Cobb Cup with a two-round total of 148 (77 and 71), second was Brian Cramb with a two round total of 150 (78 and 72) and a better second round and third was Richard Morton, also with a two-round score of 150 (77 and 73). Richard Morton won the Regimental Bowl with a two-round net total of 140 (72 and 68), second was Steven Morris with a two-round net total of 143 (74 and 69) and third was Martin Morris with a two-round total of 144 (77 and 67). There were 43 competitors, of whom nine had 2s. They were Brian Cramb, John Gillespie, Bryn Hurle, Ron Johns, Richard Morton (3), Richard Ormond, Andrew Pouton, Gareth Rees and Dean Rossiter. On Wednesday, the Tipton Cup was played, while tomorrow (Saturday), Rosslare Golf club is visiting from Ireland to play an annual match. These will be featured in next week's report.

Seniors' Section

Last week, the Seniors played two matches. On Tuesday, they played Clyne Golf Club, at Clyne, in the second round of the South Wales Seniors' Classic. Home advantage proved too much as Tenby went down 2-1 to their hosts. The winning duo were John Hancock and club captain Bob Parsons. Ken Gouldsbrough with Newman Vincent and Vince Shaw with Martin Neilan strived in vain to counteract local knowledge. However, on Thursday, again on 'foreign' soil, Tenby, delivered the goods by beating Cardigan by 6.5 to 3.5 in the weekly friendly of their summer programme. Results in this encounter (Tenby names first) were: Newman Vincent and Derek Bath beat Brian Huggett and Alan Wonfor 3 and 2; Martin Neilan and Jack Hasdell lost to Mike Snow and Richard Staggs 3 and 2; Richard Davies and Ken Gouldsbrough beat Ian Sleightholm and Ken Hadley 6 and 5; Hywel Probert and Peter Woodhouse beat Glynn Davies and Elgan Davies 5 and 3; Maurice Lewis and John Bonar lost to Ted Wells and Ken Evans 6 and 4; Geoff Aston and Brian Waters beat Bill Booth and Mike Amphlett 7 and 5; John Cook and Tony Ranoe beat Brian Young and Hywel Richards 3 and 2; David Evans and John Williams beat Brian Preston and Dave Edwards 3 and 2; Colin Griffith and Roy Morgan lost to Denis Ludgate and Tony Simpkins 2 and 1; Brian Morgan and Clifton John halved with Peter Talbot and Bill Saunderson.
