On Saturday, the club held a Chapman Foursomes Stableford competition on a day that, after a dull start, was bright and brisk, with a difficult wind coming from Penally.

The winning pair was A. Pouton and D. Cole with an excellent 41 points, and joint second were M. Heywood and A. Joseph, R. Ormond and S. Toy, L. Lindsey and R. W. Johns and J. G. Morris and C. Beynon.

About 50 pairs competed, with six achieving twos. They were M. Heywood and A. Joseph (2), J. Charnock and P. Crawford, D. H. Lloyd and M. Argent, P. Rees and J. Gottwaltz, M. Wainwright and S. Amos and J. Thomas and N. Thomas.

The next club competitions are the Spring Cup, which starts on February 16, the LGU medal on February 19 and the Foursomes qualifier on February 26. The next medal is on February 21.

The next club social event is the St. Valentine's Dance tomorrow (Saturday), and places are still available.

Rabbits in the wind II

Sunday was windy for the second week on the trot, with the direction being north north-west as opposed to last week which was more south-westerly. For you non-golfers, the wind affects each hole differently and the way we try to play them. The emphasis here is on the word try, for the way we Rabbits play from time to time it must be very trying.

Anyway, first out this week were Colin Smith and Paul Greenwood, who beat Tom McClean and Brian Dooley 4 and 3.

Second off were Dave Morgan and Mike Munroe, who lost out to Derek Farley and Bud French 2 and 1.

In third spot, Ron Murphy and Paul James shared the honours with Steve Price and Philip Watkins.

The fourth match out saw Dave Lemon (who is now subbing for Phillip Marsden until the end of the winter league) and John Murphy playing against Steve Watkins and Anthony Allen. Steve and Anthony lost 4 and 3.

The fifth match to tee-off was Meurig Jones and Jonathan Broome's battle against Richard Caley and Jason Rolfe. Meurig Jones subbed for Ben Blake. However, Richard and Jason won 2 up.

George Pegg and Dorian Thomas managed to rectify their bad luck last week with a win by beating Glyn Price and Chris Smith 3 and 2; this despite George's tremendous drive off the third tee. Did you manage to find the ball George....? And you do know we were all rooting for you as we were waiting on the third tee.

Seventh away were Fred Adlam and Bill Beynon, who kept their unbeaten record by beating Peter Watkins and Steve Harries 4 and 3.

Finally the last game produced a shock defeat for Dave Moran and Rees Davies, who succumbed to Steve Bennett and John Hunt by a massive 6 and 4. Ouch!

In last week's press release, it was stated that the Duffy Cup would be held on March 21. This has now been changed to March 14.

Chicken spot

A half decent morning for the Chicken Trot made a nice change. That was last Friday, of course, and only 23 made the cut. What's up, too many on holiday or believing what the weather forecasters say? And you know you don't do that here!

But Spike Evans was putting well, although he was a bit offline still with some of the rest of his game. In fact, we saw two spotter planes out and about, and wondered, as well as taking a couple of side bets, if they were spotting for Spike. He wouldn't say of course.

Derek Bath was bemoaning the sin bin position, as his golf was such that he was approaching the booby area. No way Derek, read on.

Gwyn Jenkins was back to his old ways again, but put it down to having to spend too much time making the bed before he came out to play.

"It affects the muscles that should be used for better things," he said.

Clifton John, bless him, was playing average golf. He said he was averaging one point a hole. Where do they get these jokes?

Peter Williams, back after a spell, don't know what the spell was, but it didn't work too well for him, was playing off his adjusted sin bin handicap of single figures, and played a nice approach four-iron to the 14th, only to take the next shot with Mike Fox's ball! He was still stuttering about that in the clubhouse afterwards.

Another one who has been caught by Morran, is Vince Shaw, who has now got to play from an eight handicap, simply for winning the trot. It has got to be something to do with the weight loss, as Vince can now see the ball as well as hit it! Sorry mate.

But also getting cut for our pains, are Paul Bradley and myself for having the temerity to share second place. Oh if only Paul!

But a nice morning nevertheless, and perhaps the good times are returning after this last wet spell. We can only hope.

Results: 1. Vince Shaw 29 pts. (£1.70); 2. Paul Bradley, John Hancock 28 (£1 each); 4. Stan Hudson, Bob Howes 27 (50p each); booby - Gwyn Jenkins (30p); twos - none.

Junior Section

Since the middle of January, we have been awarding a £5 'Pro-shop' voucher to the winners of both categories of our weekly Sunday competition (writes Ann D).

David Webb has started the year in style! He has won all four competitions so far off the black tees! A wonderful achievement, considering the dreadful weather conditions.

|Well done also to Thomas Headland, who has won the last two competitions off the adult tees! He won the January Medal, with Dan Cope a close second, and last week's stableford, with Ann-Marie Dassen the runner-up. Matthew Adams and Georgia Thomas have also played very well.

A warm welcome back to Harrison Sharma and nice to see another young lady, Megan David, playing some lovely shots.

This Sunday's competition will be the February Medal, with the following Sunday, (February 22), a stableford. Any junior member, with a handicap, may enter - 50p entrance fee. Please turn up close to 10 am to allow time for preparation and practice!

Special thanks to Neil Webb, Barry Headland, Idwal David, Phil Adams, Sonny Perkins and Ann Marsden for braving the wet and cold to give help and encouragement!
