November's Monthly Medal and the fourth Turley Trot of the year was held on Saturday.
It was played on what turned out to be the only good day in the week. The only difficult thing was the wind. This was from the north-west, which meant that it was a difficult cross-wind on most holes and a head wind on the fifth and 13th holes. The only hole where the wind provided a helping hand was the short 17th.
The event was well supported, with 107 competitors.
The Division One and turkey winner was P. G. Hoyland with a net 69, joint second were S. P. Hilling and D. J. A. Joseph with net 70s, and joint fourth were D. Kennet and A Morton with net 71s.
The Division Two and turkey winner was C. R. Webb with a net 68, second was P. J. Kidney with a net 69, third was J. E. Stevenson with a net 71 and joint fourth were R. M Jones and M. Wainwright with net 72s.
Ten competitors had a two. They were J. R. Bowen, P. J. Ellis, G. R. Field-Thomas, V. G. James, S. D. Lewis, S. D. Morgan, R. J. Ormond, M. Wainwright, C. R. Webb and D. D. G. Williams.
Tomorrow (Saturday) is the fifth Turkey Trot of the year, and this is followed by the Annual Ball at the clubhouse at 7.30 for 8 pm. This is a sell-out.
Rabbits brave the elements as Divots remain in their warm beds
Thirty-two brave rabbits lined up at the first tee last Sunday morning to kick off the second round of the winter league programme. The first pairings were able to tee-off a little earlier this week as the Divots had a break in their calendar, and what a good day to have a break, as the weather left a lot to be desired -force six winds, rain, sleet and hail poured down on the course for the majority of the day.
First off were Glyn Price and Chris Smith, who should have been playing Rhys Davies and Dave Moran, but unfortunately Rhys had work commitments and poor Dave phoned in Sunday morning ill with a touch of the 'Aurora' syndrome. We all hope you are better soon and are back with us next week.
So out of the midst came able substitutes Wynn Hopkins and Roy Morgan, who took Glyn and Chris around the course in a friendly match, as two substitutes are not allowed to play together as one pairing. Therefore, a walkover and two points were awarded to Glyn and Chris.
Second away were Ben Blake (a newcomer to the Rabbist section this year) and his partner Jonathon Broome, who were up against the mighty Colin Smith and Paul Greenwood (another newcomer this season). This was going to be a great match from the off as it was a bit of a local derby between three friends and residents of St. Florence. After a long fought out four hours, Ben Blake and Jonathon Broome managed a well earned win 3 and 2.
This match must have been talked about well into the late hours over a couple of glasses of beer in the Parsonage Inn, as Paul is the licensee of these premises (nothing like a free advert Paul).
Third off saw the great David Morgan and his partner Mike Munroe taking on Simon Evans, who was a substitute this week for Richard Caley, and Jason Rolfe. This proved to be a short match, with Dave and Mike gaining victory without going over the railway line; another good win 5 and 4.
Fourth away saw our leader and captain for the 2003/4 season, Ronald Francis (Fingers) Murphy, and his partner Paul (Jampot) James taking on the godfather of the Rabbits, Peter Watkins and his partner Stephen (navigator) Harries.
This proved to be a bit of a battle all round for both pairings, as Paul had been putting in a lot of practice the previous week. Having had a week's holiday, he spent most of it on the Tenby links - he even played in the Chickens with Ron. With all this practice and some itching powder in his waterproof bottoms, he was literally on fire. Their opponents fought tooth and nail, but managed to gain a win on the 18th, two up.
Fifth away saw that fine Scotsman Tom (Angus) McTavish and his partner Brian Dooley fight it out against Derrick Farley and his partner, Tenby's new 'Mr. Slimmer of the Year' and well known Nomad, Mr. Bud French. Derrick and Bud strolled around the course and managed a comfortable 5 and 4 win.
Next away, with a sparkle in their eyes after a fantastic win the previous week, were John Hunt and Steve Bennett (another native of St. Florence and new Rabbit in the fold this season). They were up against Stephen Watkins, with matchsticks holding his eyelids open after a late session at a wedding anniversary on Saturday, and his partner Anthony (Bimbo) Allen. This was a great match, but with all the Lucozade and Alka Seltzer in Pembrokeshire, it just was not to be. Smiling from ear to ear, another great win for John and Steve, 3 and 2.
The next match away saw Fred Adlam and his partner Bill Beynon take on Steve Price and Philip Watkins. The monsoon weather must have suited Fred and Bill as they burnt around the course to take the points with a great 8 and 7 victory.
Last away were Philip (Ace) Marsden and John Murphy, who were up against George Pegg and Dorian (Noddy) Thomas. This saw a fight of the left-handers and it proved to be a hard fought match as it was nearly dark before we saw these fine golfers coming over the path and down onto the 18th green, match still alive; George putted out to save the half and win two up.
Everyone was glad to retire to the 19th to thaw out and enjoy a few small libations and some hot food. The captain, in his speech, announced that the annual outing next year would be to the Belmont course in Hereford and the dates for your diaries are April 2-4 inclusive. The first 20 names in go and then blocks of four will be accepted. With that, 23 members put their names in the book, so any substitute members who would like to go please contact Glyn Price or any committee member.
On Sunday, November 16, there will be a display of Rabbit garments on offer; these include ties, polo shirts, sweaters, sleeveless windcheaters, caps, thongs etc. We are still looking for a volunteer to model the thong - any offers?
These garments will then be ordered and goods should be back within seven days.
Please would all members note that there has been a mistake on the weekly draw sheet for times and who plays who. A new list will be up in the corridor by this weekend, so please be early as your times and playing opponents may be different to those publicised on the board last week.
