Tim and Georgia

are medal winners

It was back to some sort of normality for the Juniors on Sunday, with Golf Foundation taking place. Everyone was given specific targets to reach through the morning.

Gill had some of the boys playing out of bunkers and learning the rules of the bunker. Ollie Worley did really well and Hugo and Rhys also managed to get two of the three out! Now, hopefully, they will know exactly what to do next time they land in a sand trap!

Mary's group had to get three out of five chips onto the green. All the group did really well, with Lewis and Sam nearly making it, but Luke Rees completed the challenge with ease.

Ian and Julia took a group each at long game. Julia's group were given the bucket target, whereas Ian's group had the umbrella target.

Bethan Osborne, Georgia Williams, Oliver Parsons, Sam Butler, Matthew Smith and George Lander all completed their target and have achieved the long game level of their Golf Foundation. David Webb and Greg Palin found their target easy and sailed their way through their level.

Julia's group finished with a mini competition. Three teams, three players in a team and two shots each. Tension was rising, nerves took over and two teams reached a play-off.

George and Sam battled it out, but scored the same. The next two up were Bethan and Oliver, but guess what, they also scored the same. It was now up to Harry and Georgia, but to no avail, they again scored the same. Were we ever going to get a winner?

George and Sam were back again, head to head, and George Lander eventually sealed victory for his winning team, Georgia Williams and Oliver Parsons, with the longest hit.

Congratulations to all those who completed the next stage of the Golf Foundation.

In the second group they had the opportunity to get out of their woods. They had to have three out of five shots land on the fairway. As we continually nagged about allowing them to use their woods, the juniors were in their element. Everyone of them passed this level, which is now the blue level of Golf Foundation.

They also had the opportunity to putt. With different starts around the putting green, they were paired up and had to score seven or less over three holes. This proved to be a real challenge for some, especially with the strong gusts of wind. You could really sympathise with those pros playing at Wentworth that day.

Claudette, Emma, Ann-Marie Oliver, Thomas and Jason proved to have the magic touch and passed the putting level of their Golf Foundation.

Sunday started off gloriously for those of us who met at 8.30 am. We went over the line and played the 15th, 16th and 17th. Thirteen budding golfers competed well and proved their practise was paying off.

Individuals who deserve a special mention are Bethan Osborne, who hit the ball as straight as a die every time; Bethan Thomas for her amazing four on the 17th and Huw Evans and Lewis Butler for their excellent putting.

However, the player of the morning was Luke Rees who had the best score over three holes and played some magnificant golf - certainly someone to look out for in the future.

Also on Sunday was the monthly medal. Winner of division one was Tim Hopkinson. The division two winner was Georgia Thomas.

Last gasp victory for Seniors

Golf widows will know that it never rains on a golf course. The one dry spot in last week's unkind May weather was on Thursday, when the Seniors entertained their Milford contemporaries.

The only precipitation to alight on the Tenby course was perspiration from the brows of the players as they battled nip-and-tuck for the honours.

Following last week's disappointment in Cardigan, captain Malcolm Arlott again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory - coasting at three up after six holes, he and partner Ken Fletcher contrived to lose the next six holes, finally losing to George James and Peter Ryder. Ken did nothing wrong.

A very late replacement, Rob Wilkins performed manfully throughout, but found the burden of partner too much. Rob clearly missed the inspiration of his captain's pre-match talk, but nevertheless kept the match alive until the 17th hole.

However, there were some Tenby successes and Denzil Thomas and David Rees in match number nine found themselves in a position to settle the issue. Uncharacteristically, the normally reliable Denzil missed a three-foot putt on the 18th to concede defeat. The ever supportive David was the first to shake his hand in commiseration. In fairness to Denzil, he was first to the 19th hole to atone for his mistake.

So the match was poised at four-and-a-half points each. More perspiration on the course! Only two people remained calm - Tenby's 10th pair. Des Stone and Clifton John, friends since their school days, delivered the goods for a close Tenby win in an enjoyable afternoon.

Full results of the matches (Tenby names first): M. Arlott and K. Fletcher lost to G. James and P. Ryder; J. Hancock and H. Griffiths halved with A. Morris and M. Durwood; R. Gundry and T. Morris lost to R. Graham and B. Millward; G. Aston and R. Morgan beat M. Buckingham and J. Laugharne; R. Murphy and K. Gouldsbrough beat J. Murrow and B. Phillips; R. Wilkins and N. Vincent lost to B. Lewis and A. Nash; H. Probert and B. Harris beat V. Crosland and H. Porter; B. Frayne and D. Morgan beat G. Jellicoe and G. Wright; D. Rees and D. Thomas lost to C. Wheeley and D. Giannuzzi; D. Stone and C. John beat J. Gwyther and J. Edwards.
