Tenby stay on course for Dyfed title
The Tenby Dyfed League team has played two matches in the past fortnight, the first away at Newport, Pembs., on August 12.
Newport are always a hard team to beat on their home track, and Tenby came away with 2.5 points, which although not a good result, was about as good as could reasonably have been expected.
Highlights were wins by Allan Morton and young Niclas Thomas, a half from Mickey Barrett and Rob Hall, and a win from Loz Phillips and David Hurle, who were four down with seven to play, and won on the last. Lowlights were the No. 8 pair who had a hole claimed for not tapping in a one inch putt by their opponents who were 50 yards away on the next tee at the time. It is hoped that the point for the win was worth ruining what had up until then been an enjoyable afternoon's game of golf for the Tenby pair.
Sunday, August 19, saw the crunch match of the 2001 season between main title contenders Tenby and Ashburnham at the Tenby course.
Tenby fielded a strong side, despite a number of top players on duty for the county.
The top pair of Brian Cramb and John Gottwaltz had to concede too many shots to a very strong pairing, who holed putts from all over the greens, losing 3 and 1.
Four of the matches went down to the final hole, with Tenby emerging victorious in all four. The final result was seven points to Tenby and two to Ashburnam. Along with the three bonus points for a home win, Tenby hold a comfortable cushion over their nearest rivals with two matches left to play against Aberystwyth away and home on September 1 and 9, respectively.
The exact position is not clear, as the table has not been updated since August 6, but Tenby are in the driving seat, and providing we do not slip up at home to Aberystwyth, we have an excellent chance of being 'A' division champions.
Results were as follows: Brian Cramb and John Gottwaltz lost 3 and 1; John Morris and Simon Rossiter won 3 and 2; Gavin Scotcher and Mickey Barrett won one up; Phil Rees and Matt Brown won 5 and 4; Steve Amos and Dean Kennett won 2 and 1; Peter Hughes and Loz Phillips won 3 and 2; Martin Morris and Kenny Breaker lost 4 and 3; Nick Rogers and Richard Morton won two up; Allan Morton and Steve Evans won one up.
There are some squad members who may feel slightly aggrieved at being left out of the team for this match, and apologies to any player who feels they should have been in the side and was overlooked. This team was put out in the belief that it had the best chance of seeing off the challenge from arch rivals Ashburnham, and a 7-2 result was excellent.

Junior competitions
Tenby Juniors will be going back to school for a rest! A fortnight ago was the Ernie Fitchett bogey competition, with 10 of Tenby's youngsters battling it out in the not so best conditions.
Having played in the sunshine the day before, the rain on Saturday had them soaked to the skin. The competition is a real challenge and for some juniors proved quite difficult.
Not, however, for Jack Guerriero, who scored an excellent +8 and won the junior trophy in style. He obviously favours wet conditions!
Second was a country member who has been playing really well over the summer holidays, Lloyd Williams, winning some cash.
A bus took them to Glynhir last Monday, with David Lloyd supporting them instead of Ian, who thought he'd better do some work! It was an early, wet and misty start, and things didn't improve through the day. Jack G. was at it again with an amazing 40 points and winning the yellow stableford competition - there's just no stopping this boy!
Holly travelled to Morriston to play for Dyfed against Glamorgan. Thanks to Mary Rowell and Beryl Oliver who took her up. Glamorgan were struggling for players, they poached our country member Nerys Lloyd and Holly played a 19-year-old! The final result was five to Glamorgan and four to Dyfed.
In Tenby there was a jamboree run by the Ladies Golfing Union. The idea was to promote girls' golf and try and encourage more girls to take up the sport. Ten Tenby girls turned out, with 24 girls altogether.
The girls were given some lessons on hitting, chipping and putting. They were quizzed on their knowledge and all had a great day.
Special mention to Rosie Thomas from Tenby; she plays with Netherwood and came second in the putting with a brilliant score of 17 over nine holes. She also hit the ball brilliantly to the flag.
Rachel Scourfield, Grace Scourfield, Rosie and Georgia Thomas won the team quiz event.
A special thank you to Gillian Roberts and the lady captain for helping out on the day.
The Haf Eclectic is up and running. You can do a card whenever you like. Just put your card in the junior box. Please don't write on the sheet, that's my job!
Some of our juniors travelled to Milford last Thursday. The boys played a 36-medal competition and Nerys played 18 holes. The boys were just glad to have a different view to look at!
Congratulations to Holly Watkins, who has made it to the Ladies Scratch Cup final - an excellent effort for someone so young. Her opponent is Heather Morgan, and the final will no doubt be an excellent one to watch, with both 'girls' playing to a very high standard.
Sunday was the Monthly Medal. The overall winner was Lloyd Williams; this boy is certainly on a winning streak! He was reduced to 30 and played under yet again! Now he's off 24! Second was David Schooling.
Jack Murphy played in his first medal and won the competition over six holes. An excellent start, well done Jack.
Elliot Ronowitz partnered him and also made a very promising start.
Georgia Thomas has obviously benefited from the entire practice and started with a five on the first. Another young girl who will do well in the future.
