Tenby poised for Dyfed League title bid

On Sunday, Milford Haven arrived at Tenby believing that they had to secure a win to avoid relegation from the 'A' division of the Dyfed League, following defeats both home and way at the hands of Newport, Pembs.

After the action was complete, and everyone was watered and fed, the Milford captain Ivor Mckenzie was passed the result sheet, and announced to an attentive audience that Milford had won by 7.5 points to 1.5 points.

Owain Picton crowed like the proverbial rooster, John Dyble started break dancing whilst simultaneously doing a Milford hand jive, when disaster struck. Ivor had read the score sheet back to front, and Tenby had in fact won by 7.5 points to 1.5 points.

Dybs sat down and went very quiet (unusual for him), and Owain's face looked like a flower pot that had been in the sun too long and cracked from the heat.

Tenby had held the third home game in a row with a good win, and are now well positioned to make a run at the title of 'A' division champions in the inaugural year of the restructured Dyfed League.

Ashburnham are the main rivals, and the home fixture on August 19 could hold the key to victory.

There were many good performances on the day, but a special well done to young Richard Morton who carried Peter Hughes to victory in Richard's second ever Dyfed League appearance, and his second victory.

Niclas Thomas, also an up and coming junior, holed superb, must make putts on the 17th and 18th greens to earn a good half, while his partner (suffering from too much sun the previous day and trauma from being stranded on Caldey Island having missed the last boat back after falling asleep in the sun) watched in awe.

This was Niclas's debut in the Dyfed League, and he performed very well.

Also making his debut was John Stenson, who, along with partner Gareth Rees, also won his match - well done Stenno!

Results were as follows: Brian Cramb and John Gottwaltz won 1 up; Anthony Hall and Dean Kennett lost 1 down; Gareth Powell and Simon Rossiter won 5/4; Steve Amos and Martin Creese won 3/2; Peter Hughes and Richard Morton won 3/2; Kenny Breaker and Nick Rogers won 4/2; Loz Phillips and Niclas Thomas halved; Allan Morton and Steve Evans won 2/1; Gareth Rees and John Stenson won 2/1.

Ladies' Captain's Day

When more than 90 members of Tenby Golf Club Ladies' Section sat down to tea last Thursday, on Ann Marsden's Captain's Day, it occurred to me that there are very few sports in which eight to 90-year-olds can partake and have the same enjoyment of their activity.

There were members present who no longer play, but maintain their interest through younger players, there were members still playing after 60 years and there were Juniors who have only just discovered the unique pleasure of hitting a very good shot.

Inevitably there were many of us disappointed with our play on the day, but everyone was delighted with the success of others.

Some 48 ladies played a full stableford round as did a number of the older Juniors and there were categories for the adult beginners as there were for the very small fry, who were escorted round their holes by the ever dedicated ladies who spend so much of their time encouraging the Junior Section.

The weather was fine and hot with a cooling breeze which meant everyone was still capable of participating in the putting competitions when they had finished their rounds.

After an excellent tea, embellished by delicious strawberries and cream provided by Ann, the numerous prizes were presented by the captain and the winner of the Captain's Prize, Pat Fox, expressed the appreciation of everyone present to Ann for organising such a happy occasion and also to the president, Mary Rowell who, for a number of years now, has provided the prizes for the Juniors on Captain's Day.

We hope Ann enjoyed her day as much as we did and that she will remember it as the highlight of her year as captain.

Results were: Captain's Prize - Pat Fox 43 pts.

Division 1-24 - Rebecca Naden 41pts; 24-37 - Mary Williams 41pts; 38-45 - Paula Morgan 41pts;

Seniors over 60 - Gillian Roberts 40 pts.

Seniors over 70 - Margaret Williams 31 pts.

Copper division (10 holes) - Rachel John 24 pts;

Hidden holes - Mairi Rees; putting - Ann Wilks 34, on back nine from Pat Lehane.

Junior prizes: 18 holes - 1. Nerys Lloyd 35 pts, on back nine from Holly Watkins; 3. Rachel Scourfield 31.

Nine holes - 1. Ann-Marie Dassen; 2. Jessica Wellum 3. Lauren Keating; 4. Megan Macro.

Six holes 1. Emma Guerriro; 2. Shelby Rossiter; 3. Georgia Thomas.

Extra prizes were won by Katy Rees, Bethan Osborne and Bethany Duckworth; putting - Rachel Scourfield 36.
