Texas Scramble

Saturday morning another shotgun event took place - in the early hours (6.30 am!) - when the generously sponsored Phillip Booth 'Texas Scramble' was held. Almost 80 golfers made the effort, being rewarded with yet another fine golfing day.

Results: 1. Paul Haley, Richard Ormond, Steve Amos, Chris Hughes 57+4=61 (£50 voucher each); 2. Gavin Scotcher, Simon Rossiter, Peter Rossi, David Morgan 62+1=63 (£30 each); 3. Phillip Booth, John Morris, Tony Key, Chan Thomas 63+1=64, back nine (£15 each).

After the golf, a hearty champagne breakfast was savoured, with most of the company staying to enjoy the thrills of a British Lions test win, all seen on the recently installed large screen, making the morning something to be remembered.

Swingers visit Cardigan

Tenby's Saturday Swingers recently took a party of 22 to Cardigan Golf Club's Men's Medal Open Day.

Windy conditions made low scoring difficult and no-one from Tenby figured in the main prizes although Paul Hoyland and Jeremy Morris both had twos on the 10th hole.

Three Swingers had creditable net 76s, namely Dai Thomas, Viv John and Gary McNeilly. Peter Rossi had a 77.

The Swingers are looking forward to repeating the trip next year if their entry is allowed after one member allegedly hooked his second shot on the 14th hole which rebounded off the clubhouse and clattered into the steward's car!

It's not too late...

Three juniors represent county

A warm summer's day and the juniors turned up in force to take part in their Golf Foundation and practice sessions. A lesson with Mark out of the bunker proved very successful, and both Ian and Mark were impressed as to how well the youngsters did. Jack Hawkey, Emma Guerriero, David Webb, Greg Lees Griffiths and Georgia Thomas made bunker shots look very easy and they certainly won't find them daunting when they go out on the course.

Julia took the youngsters yet to start Foundation golf and worked on their grip, stance and swing. This was their first proper lesson, with Julia putting into practice what she had learnt on her course. She was also sorting out the groups as to who would be ready to take on Golf Foundation in September.

There was a great deal of talent and a number of the youngsters showed great promise and with the purchase of a half set will be ready to start the Foundation course in September.

Greg Palin, Elliott Ronowitz, Dan Hawkey, Leo Moreland, Max Pattison, Joe Worley, Hannah and Alex Davies, Bronwen Thomas and Sam Butler were the main juniors who took on board everything they were taught and were eager to practice their skills. Bethan Osborne and George Lander also made a real effort with the new grip and stance they they were taught.

Thanks to Jack Guerriero who helped out and gave some of the youngsters some useful tips.

Mary had her group chipping onto the green with the help of Sam Macro. Callum managed to hit the pin on his fourth shot and Hannah Davies was consistent at hitting the green, as was Elliott.

Gill had a competition with her group and yet again Emma and David demonstrated how important practice is as they were the top scorers in their groups. Sam Turton also played well, but didn't quite beat the overall shots, and it was great to see birthday boy, Jack Merrony, hitting the ball towards the target. Sam Christopher attended his first morning session and the practice certainly paid off on the Saturday as he went on to win the stableford on Sunday. So much so that his handicap has now dropped to 39.

There weren't many entries on the Sunday. Holly Watkins and Aled Griffiths made an early start and Holly was winning with 40 points until Sam walked in. Aled also dropped his handicap by two shots, as did David Schooling, who drops by one. Congratulations to all who played, and Sam earns himself two golf balls.

Richard Morton, Dan Cope and Niclas Thomas travelled south and played in the Three Counties competition for Dyfed. An enjoyable day was had by all three boys who played some respectable golf. Dyfed were placed third after playing in a foursomes competition and a strokeplay. Congratulations to all three for representing your county.

Club competitions

Visitors to Tenby Golf Club are always impressed by the club's trophy cabinet, with its array of silver. It has to be as extensive as any golf club. Nowadays the club has a predominance of day competitions, for which most of the trophies are on offer.

It was not always so, the older trophies - some of them over 100-years-old - are for the matchplay competitions; these events run from early March to early September.

The Allen Cup regularly has an entry of over 128, which means one could play eight matches before one could claim the cup. The Sellar Cup and Presidents Cup were once run on the same lines. But in the cause of easier administration have been watered down to a qualifying medal, where eight and 16 players qualify to play matchplay in each cup, respectively. The Colwyn Williams Cup and the Reason Jones Cup, which are fourball and foursomes, always attract a large entry and are all played from spring to autumn.

The remaining matchplay competitions are restricted by handicap, the most prestigious of these being the Scratch Cup, which is restricted to the top golfers in the club (handicap 0-9), with everyone playing off level. It more often than not has the current two lowest handicaps playing each other in the final.

This year's Scratch Cup has now reached the last eight, and, apart from the defeat of John Gottwaltz by Colin Murphy, features most of the usual suspects. This year's draw seemed a little lop-sided, with B. Cramb, G. Rees, J. Morris and P. Haley all in the bottom quarter. Past winner John Morris is already out beaten by Gareth Rees.

The Sellar Cup is down to the semi-finals, namely G. Rees v R. Morton and D. Cope v C. Hill.

All the other matchplays cup have reached the last eight. These games will be reported on in due course.
