Mid-week medal

The Mid-week Medal attracted a good entry of 40 competitors, with a natural majority being "old age" pensioners.

The "oldies" however could not match the scoring of the younger element. By far the youngest being 17-year-old Richard Morton, who was just beaten for the top spot by not so old, big hitting, John Morris with a fine 69 gross. John and Richard were two of only four who were able to beat 80 gross.

Leading scores: John Morris 69-1-68 medal and £25 credit; Richard Morton 79-10-69 £15 credit; John Hasdell 92-21-71 £10 credit; Colin Murphy 78-6-72; Neil Dickinson 87-15-72; Tony Ranoe 91-19-72; Richard Hyland 85-13-72; Jamie Preston 77-5-72.

Monthly medal

Saturday's Monthly Medal had the added incentive of being a qualifier for the President's Cup, whereby the top eight scores would be eligible to compete, in match-play, for the President's Cup.

As a result of the handicap committee's decision to alter the handicap "split" for the two divisions to handicaps 0-12 and 13-28 we had 59 competitors in Division One, with 50 in Division Two, thus giving the two division a much less one-sided appearance.

DIVISION ONE (0-12) - The scoring generally could be said to be a little disappointing.

With 32 single-figure golfers involved, only 11 golfers managed to break 80 gross! One of these, of course was Brian Cramb with a fine gross 70, also a 71 from, one gathers, retired rugby man Gavin Scotcher!

Leading scores were: Neil Lovatt 75-8-67 medal and £30 credit; Lee Anslow 74-6-68 £20 credit; Phillip Booth 81-12-69 £15 credit; Mark Lemon 78-8-70 £3.50 credit; Brian Cramb 70-Scr-70 £3.50 credit; Richard Morton 80-10-70 £3.50 credit; Gavin Scotcher 71-1-70 £3.50 credit; John Gillespie 82-12-70 £3.50 credit; Roger Scholfield 82-12-70 £3.50.

DIVISION TWO (13-28): Although the scoring in this division was rather high, with only four competitors out of 50 able to equal the C.S.S. of the day, the leading scores by Nigel Ayers and son David and Colwyn Harts was very impressive, and proved scoring could have been much better.

Leading scores: Nigel Ayers 82-17-65 medal and £25 credit; David Ayers 84-16-68 £15 credit; Colwyn Harts 87-18-69 £10 credit; Paul Bradley 86-15-71 £5 credit; David Lloyd 90-17-73; Gary McKeown 87-14-73.

The eight qualifiers for the President's Cup Matchplay event are Nigel Ayers, Neil Lovatt, David Ayers, Phillip Booth, Colwyn Harts, Brian Cramb, Richard Morton, and Gavin Scotcher.

Seniors' section

The Seniors' continued their successful season with a half away to a strong Cardigan team followed by a victory at home against Milford Haven by six games to one with two halved. There were many heroic tales but pride of place goes to Mike Fox and Phillip Marsden for coming back from four down to win on the 18th. All who do not have time to hear the finer details should take a detour if either partner is sighted!

Results: Winning pairs -Roy Gundry and Ken Gouldsbrough, Bob Harris and David Leeke, Phillip Marsden and Mike Fox, Ron Murphy and John Bonar, Roy Morgan and Derek Bath, Fred Wilks and Brian Waters.

Worthy halves were obtained by Geoff Aston and Eddie Crosby, and Vince Shaw and Malcolm Arlott.

Seniors' captain Bob Storey, exhausted after making last minute changes in the team, and his partner Dudley Williams dragooned into playing whilst innocently walking through the clubhouse, alas were beaten.

Some 36 players have represented the Section in the first seven matches of the season. Thanks to all members for their co-operation.

RS

The Rabbits are having a good summer season. With a fine win of 5.5-3.5 at Newport G.C. last week.

Thanks to Pat and Mike Fox for organising this event.

MIXED FRIENDLY FOURSOMES

The first of the Friday evening mixed foursomes took place on May 18. The weather and the course were both excellent. The draw for partners provided some interesting pairings and resulted in a very close, if rather low scoring competition than usual.

Result (14 holes): 1. Pat Fox and Eddie Crosby 25 points; 2. Toni Lucas and Mike Fox 25 points (on last 3).

Thanks to the stewards Roger and Ria Phillips for providing a most enjoyable repast to wind up a most enjoyable evening.

The Usher Cup will takes place on Saturday, June 9 followed by the Sam Ackerman Trophy on Friday, June 15 and the next Friendly Foursome on June 22.

Tenby Junior Golf

Last Saturday, despite the drizzle, saw about 40 juniors keen to take part in their golf foundation. They just kept on coming!

Mark was concentrating on chipping in the lesson and, by the end of the session, each and everyone had taken on board what he had said. Katy Rees adapted the style and positioning very quickly and produced some fine chipping shots.

Despite having a bad arm, Georgia Thomas did very well aiming straight at the flag. Sam Turton, Iwan Osborne, Greg Lees Griffiths and Rhys Lewis were just some of the boys who were also developing a very good chipping style.

Gill, Mary, Colin and Ian had the rest of the gang playing in team competitions. Bryony, Sarah and Abigail joined us for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are coming back for more next week! Sam Baxter, David Webb and Jack Murphy proved to be the biggest scorers in the team competition.

Sophie John was also hitting the ball very well, her style of swing was envied by some of the grown ups. Jason Ronowitz managed to hit a golf ball straight into the umbrella! Sam Macro also pitched in from the edge of the green and showed the rest of us how its done, hitting the flag pole twice.

A special mention to Jack Hawkey who not only showed us how well he is now hitting the ball but it was also his birthday. Hope you had a good day. Sunday's medal was rained off! Some brave (or mad!) juniors did venture out, but soon returned!

Monday was the Open at Haverfordwest where a strong contingent of 13 boys and girls represented the club. Oliver Duckett, the Junior captain won the best gross with an excellent score of 72. Richard Morton also got a mention in sixth place. Oliver, Dan Cope, Richard and Niclas Thomas have also been selected to represent U18, U15 and U16 teams for the boys, so congratulations to all of you.

Holly Watkins has the third best gross for the girls with Nerys Lloyd and Rachel Scourfield doing well in the nett competition.

The Tenby team are now leading the Order of Merit table, well done to you all and let's hope we can keep that lead in the next open.

Tuesday was a girls day out at Cardigan with 14 representing Tenby in the West Wales Championship. Tenby provided the most entries in all categories and came away with a number of prizes! Sophie John won the 9 hole competition with an excellent 17 points. Anne-Marie Dassen played her first 18 holes and did really well. Bethany Duckworth, Shelby Rossiter, Emma Guerreiro and Gabby Morris played their first ever Junior competition over six holes and earned themselves a golf ball each.

Well done to all those who entered and a big thank you to the ladies from Tenby for helping, as well as Frank, Ian and Jack who kept the troops going!

Ladies' Section

Since Easter, the 2001 season has really got under way and May has been a busy month for the ladies with fine weather making everyone feel happier about playing.

The April LGU medal was won by Julia Sweet with a fine nett 68 followed by Anita Davies on 70 and Stella Donovan on 72.

The following week, the qualifying round for the LGU Coronation Foursomes competition was played and the qualifiers were Lyn Bonar and Anne Morris on nett 73.5 followed by Julie Jenkins and Linda Thomas on 75.5 on the last nine from Ann Follon and Toni Lucas. The South Wales final is at Southerndown in June and it would be grand if Lyn and Anne could qualify from this for the grand final at St. Andrew's in October.

The first Hill-Lowe Bogey competition of the season found Liz Storey with her putting (and all other) boots on - she finished on plus five and was more than delighted with this result. Nesta Hart was second on plus two and Ruth Goldwait and Rita Collins both played to their handicaps on plus one.

The WLGU Australian Spoons qualifying round was played on a fine warm day and the qualifiers were Ann Blackmore and Gillian Roberts with 35 points, with Ann Follon and Toni Lucas on 31 and Anita Davies and Janet Mabbett on 30. The Southern regional final is at Fairwood Park on July 4, and we wish Ann and Gillian every success.

The weather for the main day of the May Medal was quite awful and no one ventured on to the course. The winner from the weekend players was Holly Watkins with a nett 69 which reduced her handicap to 12 again.

Last week, on a lovely early summer day, Pat Fox gathered 42 points in a stableford competition with Anne Morris on 37 and Ann Blackmore on 36. Somehow most of the rest of us could not take full advantage of the fine weather and excellent condition of the course.

Apart from the weekly competitions there has been much activity in the section of one kind or another.

Ann Marsden took a team of Ann Blackmore, Denise Edwards, Pat Fox and herself to Cardigan for the first time participation of a Tenby team in the National Interclub Rules of Golf Quiz They were all very nervous but acquitted themselves well, just losing out to the Cardigan men's team 24-23. This is a competition we could all do with entering!

The Scratch Three Counties League team which has involved Denise Edwards, Linda Evans, Heather Morgan and Holly Watkins this year, has continued to play well and won their recent match against Carmarthen 2-1 and this week were given a walk over by Ashburnham.

The Three Counties League sides have played Haverfordwest and South Pembs. away in recent weeks and the A and B teams won both their matches, so Tenby has begun the season in good form - long may it continue.

A fortnight ago the Senior section completed their year with a visit to Banc-y-felin, organised by the captain Lyn Bonar. The weather was superb and everyone enjoyed playing this tricky but pleasant course. After an excellent meal, the Molly Whitehead trophy was presented to Mary Rowell and other prizes were won by Mair Evans, Sam Morgan, Betty Charnock and Beryl Oliver. Lyn was thanked for her running of the section during the last season and she announced that Sam Morgan would be taking over for the next season. We wish her well.

Finally, we must congratulate Holly Watkins on her performance in the Welsh Ladies' Close Championship at Harlech last week. She is probably the youngest member of the Ladies' Section to play in the championship and, over the extended course of Royal St. David's, she played well below her handicap in both qualifying rounds, finishing with a much better total than a number of more experienced competitors. Well done, Holly.
