Tenby Junior Golf
The second level of golf foundation a fortnight ago, with the young golfers put into their various groups, lessons and practise started in earnest.
Mark taught the juniors individually, working on their swing technique and style. By the end of the lesson the tips had certainly been taken on board with a number of children reaching the challenge of hitting between the two buckets set 50 yards away. Jack Hawkey, Shelby Rossiter, Elliott Scotcher, Kathy Rees, Greg Lees Griffiths, Toby Rossiter, Jack Murphy, Hugo Wellum and Tom McLoughlin all did exceptionally well with the pro and nearly passed their first stage on level 2.
Ben Griffiths, Jack Guerriero, Jason Ronowitz, Sam Morgan, Joe Llama, Sophie John, Clarke Williams and Jack Merrony, in the second group did manage to pass the first stage of level 2, with the rest not far behind. Another week's practise and I'm sure the whole group will pass.
Charles Upham, Claudette Pouton and Jessica Wellum all played really well after their individual lesson.
These youngsters doing the golf foundation should be now looking at either individual or paired lessons with Tim Gilpin the assistant pro. Tim charges £10 for half an hour, you can either go on your own or pair up with a mate. This will enable you to pass the further stages of the golf foundation.
Sam Baxter and David Webb showed great skill in the chipping as did Toby yet again who scored the highest in his group. The girls shone in the chipping, with Lauren Keating and Sophie John showing the boys how it's done!
In the final chipping group Sam Morgan stole the show, and a deserved win as well. This boy certainly enjoys his golf, I think he's got a tent on the practice ground, the amount of time he spends there!
Alex Harley returned to golf after some time out, and in his group provided the winning score. Emma Guerriero is hoping to soon reach her brother's standard and beat him as she also scored well in her group. George Lander also played very well, proving to be the highest scorer in the group.
Greg Palin, Matthew May, Elliot Ronowitz, Joe Worley and John Carter also showed how the regular practicing has paid off. Young Lloyd Thomas came to the practice for the first time and demonstrated great promised, we look forward to seeing him regularly on a Saturday morning.
Two weeks ago was the Cobb Cup and the Regimental Bowl, the main event of the year for the men, the club championship, with some of our juniors competing. The day started off promising, however when the rain came, it was in force. Oliver Duckett finished in the top five in the morning, but unfortunately nobody from the junior section came away with a prize.
Last Sunday was the Steve Evans trophy. It was great to see so many entries as well as Ben Roberts who was playing in his first competition. The overall winners were Brett Davies and Dan Cope, with Darren Taylor and David Schooling not far behind.
Third spot went to the family pairing of Nerys Lloyd and Hywel Lloyd. Congratulations to everyone who played. Tomorrow it is back to normal, with golf foundation from 9 to 11 and on Sunday there is the monthly medal.
From June 17 we will be starting lessons with Tim from 9-10 for those boys off the white tees. Any young golfer playing off the white boxes is welcome to attend a group lesson with Tim where he will give you some pointers and tips. This will hopefully encourage you to stay for the morning and play in the junior competition after! Speak to Oliver to find out more!
Congratulations to Holly Watkins who played in the Ladies Close Amateur Championship at the weekend. She was a credit to both the Ladies and Junior section competing with the elite of Wales and playing golf to match them. Unfortunately she only just made the cut for the Monday competition but with an 83 and 84 gross should be extremely proud of herself.
Big turn out for club event
Saturday saw the revival of the Serendipity Bowl and David Hughes Cup, after a lapse of one year.
The bowl, presented of course by Frank Booth, and the cup by our past president, members play with their invited guests in a Fourball Better-ball Stableford the sexes are not mixed, so the "Bowl" is won by the top male pair, while the two best ladies win "The Cup."
Sixty-one pairs entered this year's event, the men just out numbering the ladies. As has been the norm for our competitions this year., it was perfect golfing weather, and with the course in the fine condition, high scoring became the order of the day.
The presentations took place in the evening, after many competitors had savoured the running buffet put on by the much appreciated Roger and Ria. This, plus the presence of the ladies, ensured a well attended "presentation of prizes."
The winners of the ladies event with an amazing 49 pts was Tenby's A. Blackmore and her guest C. Keenan. It would seem that Mrs. Maher had not been able to sort out the ladies handicaps quite so thoroughly as husband Eamonn, the winners being 10 points clear of runners-up H. Morgan and P. Perkins.
The men's event was a much tighter competition. K. Fletcher, of Tenby playing with P. Brady on 42 just pipping Martin Morris, Tenby and Neil Edwards, the winners in 1997 on 41.
It must be mentioned that Neil Edwards from Carmarthen, on the three occasions the event has been played has finished 2nd, 1st and now 2nd. Martin Morris has been Neil's partner on two occasion his other partner was our "Retired" handicap secretary Ian Griffiths, which surely proves how well Neil had played on each occasion.
Leading scores as follows:
DAVID HUGHES CUP
1. A. Blackmore and C. Keenan 49pts; 2. H. Morgan and P. Perkins 39 (2nd 9); 3. D. Edwards and T. Vincent 39; 4. F. Lain and S. Shooter 37 (2nd 9).
FRANK BOOTH'S SERENDIPITY BOWL
1. K. Fletcher and P. Brady 42pts; 2. M. Morris and N. Edwards 41; 3. O. Duckett and R. Duckett 40; S. Morris and T. Morris 39.
The May Medal takes place tomorrow (Saturday, May 27) and from June 2 - 8 will be the club's open week.
Surprise defeat
Tenby's club team lost 5.5 - 3.5 at Milford last weekend, a surprise after the previous week's win at Carmarthen.
Postponed
Tomorrow's (Saturday's) Dyfed League game away to Aberystwyth has been postponed.
This match will now be played on Saturday, September 1.
Saturday swingers
The Saturday Swingers visited Trefloyne Golf Club last Saturday on their annual visit and the stableford scores were much higher this year.
The winner of the 18th hole stableford competition with an excellent score of 36 points was Phil Keating closely followed by Paul Haywood on 35 points.
Scores as follows: Phil Keating 36pts; Paul Haywood 35; Hugh Roberts 33; Steve Amos 32; Ross James 31; Peter Jenkins 30; Gary Willars 30; Clive Webb 30; Graham Strand 30.
There were two 2's both by Paul Haywood.
Not so many golf balls were lost this year, though we believe John Gillespie did lose one in the ball washer!
Cardigan Golf Club is the venue for the Swingers competition on Saturday, June 16. For details please get in touch with 'Arkwright.'
Scoop has no longer got his Ernie Fitchet clubs, he has new ones.
One Swinger had gone missing. He has not been seen since late Friday night. We are all wondering if Geoff is capable of lasting the Irish trip?
Final day for Chickens
Wonderful weather greeted some 40 chickens as they lined up for the "Danny Carew" putter and the "Norman Badham" Trophy.
This was the day there would be no entry fee. No sin bin. No twos and no booby. No wonder Vince managed to amass many prizes, which he managed to distribute to the good, the average ,the oldest, the youngest, he had only just run out before he got to the prettiest and the ugliest!
Back to golf, the "Danny Carew putter" was won by Des Wickland with 29 points. Follow by "A" flight of three with 28, Moran Boot, Fred Adlam and Vince himself.
Two points behind were "B" flight on 26 points, Neil Dickinson, Roy Morgan and Brian Waters, if only we could have got another two with 29 points we could have had a whole squadron!
The "Norman Badham Trophy" for the over 70s was won by Doug Perry with 28 points, just pipping Danny Canning also with 28 points on the back six holes, George Pegg and Jim Taylor followed with 27 and 25 respectively, all those mentioned received trophies, medals and a bottle of something or other.
At the lunch after, as usual beautifully presented by Roger, Ria and staff, we were entertained by various speeches during the presentations. This was the point when Mein Fuhrer had more bottles than he could give away. A enforced absence, Sonny Perkins, who ensured us all that he would be playing again in October, great news, we miss you're quips etc on and off the course Sonny. The biggest financial winner this season was Alan Pace, not bad for a gentleman in his 80s.
Vince and Mick would like to thank all Chicken Trotters for not only making it easy for them all season, but also for the nice gifts they received, Micks still got some of his left, see you off the roost in October.
