Last Monday saw the first competition in the South Wales Girls golfing calendar, the Spring Cup, being played at Grove Golf Club, Porthcawl. The competition is split into three sections, 18-hole medal, 18-hole stableford and nine-hole medal for the beginners.

The Spring Cup for the 18-hole medal was won on the day by Holly Watkins with a gross 77 nett 70, some three shots below par, with the next best gross being 85!

The Spring Trophy for the 18-hole stableford players was won by Ann-Marie Dassen with an astounding 46 points, and earned her a reduction in handicap to 29.

The nine-hole competition saw Emma Guerrerio being the winner, with Georgia Thomas coming third, an excellent achievement considering that both girls were playing against girls of up to 13 years of age.

The taste of victory was short-lived, however, for poor Holly, as when she returned home, she discovered that she was disqualified for playing off an incorrect handicap by 0.2 following a card handed in for a competition the day before.

Nevertheless, Holly was victorious in the Dyfed Schools Championship at Penrhos and now has a chance to perform well in an attempt to gain her Welsh Schools International Cap. At least there is a new consistency to her scoring and no doubt further reductions in handicap and other victories during the season will make up for the Spring Cup disappointment!
