Tenby Town Council is preparing for the Platinum Jubilee Weekend in June, to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

The weekend with extra bank holidays runs from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5, and the Town Council is planning some events and to support other activities around the seaside town.

Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Tracey Evans, was joined by fellow Councillor and Town Crier Jim Cornwell and the Town Clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies to announce the plans.

“We are really excited that Tenby is planning for a magnificent Jubilee weekend!” she said.

“It will be a great chance for us all to come together as a community and celebrate. Everyone has the chance to get involved in a range of activities,” she explained.

At 2 pm on Thursday, June 2, the Mayoral Party and the Town Crier will come to Tudor Square where a Royal Proclamation will be issued, something that will be happening simultaneously in towns and cities across the UK.

Later the same day, Tenby Male Choir will be performing a concert in St. Mary’s Church; while at 9.45 pm a ‘Civic procession’ will arrive at the top of Castle Hill where a beacon will be lit as part of a chain of beacons across the UK.

The focus for Friday will be street parties, with individual places around Tenby encouraged to organise their own events.

Pembrokeshire County Council will be seeking to co-ordinate any necessary road closures and anyone interested in receiving further information should contact Tenby Town Council.

On Saturday the focus of the day will be the Big Platinum Jubilee Parade at 3.30 pm, which will be led by Samba Doc who will weave their way thorough the streets of the coastal town. Every organisation in Tenby will be invited to be represented and individuals will also be able to join in.

Clr. Mrs Evans continued: “The procession is to celebrate Her Majesty’s long reign. It will be a celebration of her service and duty to the Country but it will also be celebrating the service and duty done by so many people during the pandemic.”

The parade will be welcoming people to represent their areas of work including - retailers, care workers, nurses, teachers, emergency services and many more.

“This is our opportunity to say thank you to everyone for their duty and service to our town and to enjoy ourselves doing so,” added Clr. Mrs Evans.

The Big Parade will pass through Tudor Square before culminating in the Harbour by St. Julian’s Church where there will be a few words before the Parade is dismissed to enjoy the rest of the day.

On the Sunday, Clr. Cornwell is organising an afternoon on Castle Hill with music from the Salvation Army Band, who will be playing from the Bandstand, and entertaining people as they enjoy picnics on the hill.

“This will be a lovely traditional family event and all are welcome to come and enjoy the music in this most fabulous setting,” he explained.

Tenby Town Council agreed the plans for the weekend at their most recent meeting on Tuesday.

They also committed to purchasing bunting for the town and will provide it to key areas so that they can display it.

Further details of events will be published soon.
