HAKIN UTD. U12s 1 TENBY U12s 2 At last the switch to the full-size pitch, 11-a-side, offside etc. and the daunting prospect of an away match at Hakin for the Londis at Manorbier Post Office and Stores sponsored team. Blustery, but sunny conditions, saw both teams start eagerly and it was end to end action while players accustomed themselves to their new found space. Tenby dominated the first half, but ended the half all-square. The second half saw Tenby continue to look the more dangerous, until a speculative shot from Hakin caught Scott off his line and the ball trickled in, putting the visitors behind. Tenby lifted their game and a succession of shots were parried or saved by the in-form Hakin goalie. Towards the end of the game, a great corner, met by David, hit a Hakin player to equalise. Sustained effort from the visitors followed and a fierce volley from Hugo was knocked down by the goalie for the ever-present Elliot to hit the ball home from the rebound. The final few minutes were nail-biting in the extreme, but eventually Tenby ran out the relieved victors. All round the boys coped well with this new experience - Scott had a sound game in goal; Tom was steady in defence; Toby and David ran their socks off and Elliot produced some wonderful touches. A game mostly played in good spirits and a good start to the new campaign. And so to Monday's twilight match at home against Monkton TENBY U12s 2 MONKTON SWIFTS U12s 2 A large crowd of spectators gathered at the Clicketts for the first home league game of the season and what a cracker to liven up a Monday evening they witnessed. The Londis at Manorbier Stores and Post Office team started at full speed, as did the opposition. At breathtaking speed, the ball went from one end of the pitch to the other, with both sides trying to open the scoring. Goalmouth scrambles were followed by speculative long-range shots and vice versa, as both defences and attacks fought for every ball. The goalies had to be ever-vigilant and both proved to be a credit to their clubs. After some sustained peppering of the Monkton end of the pitch, Elliot superbly put the ball in the back of the Monkton net, but the visitors did not rest and replied fairly quickly. One apiece at half- time. The action continued afresh in the second half, at the same breakneck speed, with both teams playing some lovely touches, although tackles were not always successful. Jack, having a really strong game, galloped down the right to cross to twinkle-toes Elliot, who scored the second. Again Monkton would not lie down and managed to equalise in a game which could have gone either way. Final result 2-2. So, yet another draw, as last season, with a competitive Monkton team. Jack had a blinder (thank goodness for the respite in the cricket!); Scott continues to grow in confidence between the posts; Corey, Sam, Tom and Rhys battled well; Toby, Hugo, David and Jack combined well in midfield; Dan, showing good sportsmanship throughout, scrapped for every opportunity and Elliot was a constant threat whenever he got the chance. The subs George, Cheyne and Nathan slotted in well when they came on and contributed to a solid performance. Thanks to coaches Simon and Neil, to Ted on the line, to ref Colin for both games - bet you slept more soundly than the boys!, to the sponsors and supporters. It's going to be a nail-biting season - so far, so good. Keep it up boys! Squad: Scott Cowan, Corey Morris, Sam Butler, Tom Grover, Rhys Nicholas, Hugo Wellum, Toby Rossiter, Jack Murphy, David Webb, Daniel Fairlie, Elliot Goldsmith, George McBeth, Nathan Farmiloe, Cheyne Lloyd. TENBY U14s 7 HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY U14s 2
Willow Carpentry are the new sponsors for Tenby Under 14s, and they kicked off the season with an excellent win over Haverfordwest County at the Clicketts. As well as a new sponsor, Tenby also have a new captain in Curtis Hurlow, who will be assisted by his vice, Ashley Smith. It was fitting that the captain should get the opening goal following a corner 10 minutes into the match. And by coincidence, Smith got the second after a good through ball by Dan Edwards. Alex Heesom, relishing his new role as striker, grabbed the next two goals. The first, a smart shot from Greg Lee-Griffiths's cross and the second, straight from the restart, following an excellent ball from Jordan Richards. Phil Horsley got number five when he latched onto Smith's cross cross at the far post and placed the ball wide of the County 'keeper. The County had a few chances, courtesy of Tom Cuffe, but the home 'keeper, Jake Roberts, dealt with these comfortably. The Seasiders maintained the pressure in the second half, but found it hard going, as the County did in the first half, running into the strong wind. However, Gareth Warlow made light work of it when he finished off two crosses, one from Richards and the other from Horsley. Up to this point the home defence were solid and the County found it difficult to break through Aaron Roberts, Edwards, Hurlow and Patrick Elliott. Seven goals to the good, Tenby learned a harsh fact, that a team still needs to keep its shape, but unfortunately they didn't and conceded two late goals. It's important to keep a clean sheet, especially when some leagues are won on goal difference. A good opening game to the season, with Richards, Hurlow and goalkeeper Jake Roberts prominent. Tenby side: J. Roberts, A. Roberts, P. Elliott, C. Hurlow, D. Edwards, P. Horsley, G. Lees-Griffiths, J. Richards, A. Smith, G. Warlow, A. Heesom, C. Millward, R. Fairlie, W. Thomas.
