KILLAY COLTS U16s 1 TENBY AFC U16s 2 (AET)
Tenby progressed to the semi-finals of the West Wales Cup through a goal by Sam Christopher six minutes from the end of extra-time. The game was scoreless at half-time, and as well as defending solidly against quick opposition, a strong wind and a slight slope, Tenby themselves went close to scoring on several occasions. Brett Evans was a tower of strength in the middle of the defence, and Billy Vaughan, the other centre back, gave a brilliant display of interceptions and all-round ball skills to inspire the rest of the team and impress the spectators. When Tenby did strike back, the home goalkeeper made some splendid saves when Mikey Boswell and Rob Colley broke through having left defenders behind them. Early in the second half, Tenby went 1-0 ahead when Rob Colley lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper for a spectacular goal, but Killay equalised soon afterwards with a low shot which gave Richard Bridges no chance at his left-hand post. Both teams became more adventurous after this, and Billy Vaughan and Brett Evans surged forward when well covered by James Howells and Kurt Walsh to give support to the hard-working Aaron Goldsmith in midfield. Killay also became quicker on the counter-attack to keep Richard Bridges, who had a sound match, busy in the Tenby goal. Tenby's first half injury problems, where Luke Dedman had replaced a limping Josh Bevan, were added to on the hour, when James Howells had to leave the field. Adam Johns did well when he switched to right-back for Tenby, to help shore up the defence, with Michael Halligan coming on to operate well on the left. The 1-1 score at the end of 80 minutes was a fair reflection on the efforts of both teams, and the game went into extra-time. Sam Christopher's dramatic winner gave the Tenby squad the result they richly deserved for a late spell of attacking play, and with Luke Dedman working extremely hard in the closing minutes, the Seasiders held on safely to their 2-1 lead. Tenby squad: Richard Bridges, James Howells, Brett Evans, Billy Vaughan, Kurt Walsh, Sam Christopher, Aaron Goldsmith, Adam Johns, Rob Colley, Mikey Boswell, Luke Dedman, Michael Halligan, Rhys Winter. Thanks to Nick for running the line. PRENDERGAST U9s 4 TENBY U9s (B) 0
Tenby's good run of form ended at Haverfordwest on Saturday, when a very good Prendergast side showed that a good passing team will usually beat a defensive one. To be fair, the Tenby back line of Daniel Tiesing, Joel Downes and Luke Hartland did well in a first half of almost constant Prendergast pressure to keep the score down to 1-0. The star of the Tenby side, though, had to be goalkeeper Will Davies, who pushed shots around posts and over the bar or just hurled his body on to loose balls with little regard for his safety. The one shot that beat the Tenby goalkeeper came halfway through the first half. A corner, which was only half cleared, was smashed back goalward through half-a-dozen players, giving the Tenby 'keeper no sight of the ball until it ended up in the back of the net. For Tenby's part, in the first half they did manage to force a couple of corners when their midfield players Adam Muskett and Henrik Jaakola pushed the ball up to Sean Conbeer and Tom Harries. From one of these corners taken by Adam Muskett, Tom Harries had a left foot shot saved easily by the Prendergast 'keeper as there was little power in it. In the second half, Joel Downes was replaced by Ryan Kent at the back and he managed a couple of last-ditch clearances, before one Prendergast attack saw a shot deflected and roll slowly over the Tenby line. Now 2-0 down, Tenby threw caution to the wind. A good move down the right by Sean Conbeer forced a corner and as the ball came straight past most of the players, Adam Muskett hit a shot just wide. Prendergast kept pushing the ball out to their right winger, who put in some lovely moves. From one of these crosses, a headed clearance was not dealt with by the Tenby defence and a hard low shot gave Will Davies no chance, 3-0. Once again Tenby pushed forward and once again they won a corner, this time on the left. Adam Muskett put in a nice cross and as the ball bounced around in the Prendergast goal area, Tom Harries's left foot shot went straight to the 'keeper. For the last 10 minutes, Prendergast had almost complete control, but Tenby never once stopped tackling. Daniel Tiesing, Luke Hartland and Ryan Kent hacked balls into touch or gave away corners in an attempt to stop Prendergast scoring again and Will Davies dived on ball after ball with boots flying all around him. So it was bad luck and not at all what they deserved when just before the final whistle two Tenby players went to meet the same ball, only for it to bounce awkwardly between them and straight to a Prendergast forward, who could hardly believe his luck as he stabbed the ball into the goal, past the despairing dive of the 'keeper. The Tenby players showed a never-say-die attitude throughout the match and will hopefully have some easier games in the coming weeks. TENBY U13s 0 CAMROSE U13s 2
Tenby Cycles and Skateboards sponsored Tenby Under 13s' title hopes took another severe dent last Saturday, when they lost at home to arch rivals Camrose. A goal in each half, by their striker Ashley Andrews, settled the match which could have gone either way. There is never much between these two sides whenever they meet and this game was no exception. But the main difference between the two teams was the outstanding performances of the visiting centre halves, Alex Alderwick and Adam Banner. After an opening 15 minutes of even play, Andrews scored his first goal. A long Camrose ball was headed out of defence by Tenby captain Patrick Elliott, which then fell kindly to the feet of Andrews. Andrews hit the ball, on the half volley, high over the Tenby 'keeper Jake Roberts's head, skimming the underside of the crossbar on the way into the goal. The rest of the half was stalemate, except for one good chance which fell to the Tenby striker Jordan Richards. A good run and cross from the livewire Gareth Warlow saw Richards just failing to connect with the goal at his mercy. The second period was much the same as the first, with both sets of defences playing out of their skins. With 18 minutes left on the clock, Camrose were awarded a penalty for obstruction and Andrews placed the spot-kick just inside the post, giving Roberts no chance of saving it. Tenby went chasing for the remainder of the game, but couldn't find a way past Alderwick and Banner. When they eventually did, Gareth Walow's shot was well saved by the visiting 'keeper. This was the second defeat in a row for Tenby, but they must put this behind them and concentrate on their last two remaining league matches and their cup semi-final, in order to lift any silverware. Tenby side: J. Roberts, A. Heesom, P. Elliott, G. Lees-Griffiths, D. Edwards, P. Horsley, C. Hurlow, A. Roberts, G. Warlow, J. Richards, A. Smith, C. Millward, L. Moreland.
Girls football
Tenby Under 10s girls started their defence of the league with their first set of matches being played last Sunday at Pembroke Leisure Centre. They met Camrose in their first match and won 10 -0. Holly Furlong scored six goals in the first half, before going in goal. Lois Horsley scored another four in the second half. Polly Scotcher made a welcome return and she showed her class with her consistent running and tackling. Alise Robison looked solid in defence and Sarah Jackson showed good skills when she came out of goal in the second half. The next match was against Clarbeston Road. This was a harder test, but the girls worked well together and won the game 6-3, with Holly scoring all six goals. Squad: Holly Furlong, Alise Robison, Sarah Jackson, Polly Scotcher, Lois Horsley.
