GOODWICK 6 TENBY 0
Tenby 1st XI made the long journey north to Goodwick on Saturday for a division one match, and despite taking in the spectacular Chinese Gates en route, failed to gain inspiration from them for this tough away fixture. Missing a few key players and with no substitutes, Tenby took to the field still full of confidence and for the first 20 minutes more than matched the home team, with Stephen Hanlon inspirational with his long probing balls. But it was Goodwick who made the breakthrough first, with a sloppy goal after a defensive mix-up, and then five minutes later went further ahead after being awarded a penalty, which Lewis Hurlow was very unlucky not to save after getting a hand to it. Although 2-0 down, the Tenby players' heads did not drop and they were unlucky not to claw a goal back when Hanlon, after beating five players, saw his fierce shot rebound off the crossbar into the grateful home custodian's hands. With five minutes of the first-half remaining, Tenby's slender hopes of gaining something from the game evaporated when Goodwick scored their third goal after a good solo run from their diminutive number seven - and that's how it stayed until half-time. After a stern talking to from the management duo of Peter Thomas and Jammy James, the team returned to the pitch looking for an early goal to restore any chance they had of a comeback, but alas, 12 minutes after the restart, Goodwick bagged a fourth, completely against the run of play, when a quick ball out of defence found their in-form striker, who neatly tucked it away in the bottom corner. The fifth goal was scored after Goodwick were awarded a second penalty, for what can only be described as an innocuous challenge in the box. The spot-kick was dispatched comfortably and Tenby once again found themselves picking up the ball from the back of the net. With 20 minutes remaining, the home side brought on three pairs of fresh legs, a luxury not afforded to the Tenby team, and with sustained pressure, Goodwick got their sixth and final goal. It came after good work on the right flank saw a cross to the back post, which was gratefully headed home by the Goodwick number 10. Despite the result, there were a few good performances. Lloyd showed good strength in midfield, while Sonny Phillips showed great skills along with Perry Broadhurst on the right. In goal, Lewis Hurlow made a number of quality saves and, of course, the hard-working Hanlon showed just why he's destined for a higher standard of football with yet another fine performance. Thanks to 'Berol's Big Breakfasts' for sponsoring the match ball. Team: Lewis Hurlow, Marc James, Steve Williams, Ben Brookes, Stephen Hanlon, Perry Broadhurst, Jimi Thomas, Lloyd, Luke Askew, Ryan Lawrence, Sonny Phillips.
JOHNSTON U12s 1 TENBY U12s 8
The Tenby Cycle and Skateboard sponsored Tenby Under 12s progressed to the next round of the cup with a comprehensive win over Johnston. After this excellent all-round display, they will meet either Herbrandston or Clarbeston Road in the semi-final. The two teams were evenly matched for the opening 10 minutes, as they both tried to adapt to the greasy surface and crossfield wind. A good break out of defence saw Ashley Smith slot a ball between two defenders for Gareth Warlow to use his blistering pace and guide a ball past an advancing 'keeper. Smith again produced the perfect pass, this time for Josh Koop to shoot high into the home net. Johnston then hit a purple patch, but failed to breach the visiting defence of Alex Heesom, Patrick Elliott, Greg Lees-Griffiths and Nicky Jones. However, this patch was abruptly halted following a long clearance by Elliott to Smith out wide on the left. Smith used all his trickery to edge past two defenders and squeeze the ball into the net, off the far post. From the restart, Josh Koop robbed Johnston of the ball and with four passes involving Koop, Jordan Richards, Smith, Koop again, and finally Warlow, the ball was back in the Johnston net. Johnston were struggling to cope with the pace of Warlow and their goalie made some outstanding saves to keep the score to four-nil at half-time. Tenby kept the pressure on during the second period and added to their total through Warlow, after good work from Daniel Edwards, Richards and Koop. Johnston never let their heads drop and Tenby had to be on their guard at all times. Nicky Jones fielded a ball, deep inside his own half, and made good ground before passing inside to Richards. The fullback continued his run down the wing and received the ball back from Richards, cut inside a defender and his low shot just evaded the Johnston 'keeper. A Rob Fairlie clearance found Curtis Hurlow on the right and his cross fell to Richards who made no mistake with a low drive. Johnston grabbed a consolation goal with a good move of their own which finished with a shot that gave Jake Roberts, in the Tenby goal, no chance. The red and blacks had the final word, however. A flowing movement involving Hurlow, Edwards, Richards and Oliver Worley ended with Smith hitting the back of the net, at the third attempt! Tenby side: J. Roberts, N. Jones, P. Elliott, G. Lees-Griffiths, A. Heesom, C. Hurlow, A. Smith, J. Richards, D. Edwards, J. Koop, G. Warlow, R. Fairlie, O. Worley.
TENBY UNDER 8s 1 PRENDERGAST VILLA UNDER 8s 1 An exciting clash between two of the county's leading Under 8 sides ended with the spoils shared at the Clicketts on Saturday. Braving heavy rain, both sides worked hard to win a closely fought game that was full of skill and goalmouth action. Tenby created the first opening when Declan Escott made a great run through the middle and fed Tom Harries whose low shot was saved well by the Prendergast 'keeper. Moments later the attackers linked up again to open the scoring, following a strong run down the right by Dylan Rees. His cross was flicked past the goalkeeper by Declan Escott, providing a simple tap-in for Tom Harries at the far post. After the restart, the visitors launched a wave of attacks and only a great save from Daniel Evans in the Tenby goal denied them an immediate equaliser. A long shot from Prendergast was then deflected past the right post for a corner. Tenby cleared their lines, but the Villa attackers were soon put through on goal again, with Scott Ferney dashing back to make a last-ditch tackle and keep the home side's lead intact. Having survived a few minutes of sustained pressure, Tenby almost went two-up. A long through pass from Owen Coombs sliced open the Prendergast defence and a cracking shot from Declan Escott crashed off the post. However, as Tenby pushed forward, the visitors broke with an end-to-end passing movement that released striker Tom Calveley whose cool finish made it one-one. The second-half was an epic midfield battle, with Jannik Coop, Tom Dyson and Charlie Flockton battling hard for Tenby and pushing Prendergast back into their own half. The home side forced several corners and Declan Escott was again denied by the post. Prendergast also had their chances to win, but were denied by a brilliant defensive performance from Spencer Williams, whose tackling and running kept Tenby in the game in the closing minutes. In a friendly game between other members of the Tenby and Prendergast squads, the home side won two-nil, with great goals from Adam Muskett and Liam Bowen. Thanks to all players and parents for an entertaining morning of football played in a great atmosphere. Thanks also to Park Road Fish and Chips, sponsors of the Tenby Under 8s kit. TENBY U10s A 2 KILGETTY U10s 0
After a prolonged festive and weather-affected break, the Londis at Manorbier and Post Office Stores sponsored squad ran out onto a remarkably playable home pitch (congrats bro and your gang) to confront an improving Kilgetty side. The visitors were fast into action, winning an early corner, but Tenby replied quickly, an Elliot goal settling the home side into their stride. The defence of Corey, Toby and Sam (some wonderful passes!) slotted the ball through to the midfield of Jack, Hugo and Tom who, on top of their games, provided the strike force of Elliot and David with some great opportunities. Kilgetty played a strong defensive game, but the rhythm of the home side, who made good use of the whole pitch and their undoubted skills, led to a 2-0 advantage at half-time, Elliot again scoring from a Toby pass. Changes at half-time saw Kilgetty come to the fore, with Scott's clean sheet this season looking in danger! But positive sideline encouragement from coach Simon saw the boys, heads held high, perform well. Jack played more defensively, allowing Toby freedom to roam and this he did with relish, with Daniel, George, D'Arcy and Adam, making valuable contributions. A terrific game played in a sportsmanlike way - well done to both sides. Thanks to coaches Simon and Neil; Debbie, Jan and Lori for the hot-dogs; Kilgetty for a great game and our kit sponsors. Squad: Scott Cowan, Toby Rossiter, Corey Morris, Sam Butler, George Flockton, Jack Murphy, Hugo Wellum, Tom Koop, Adam Conbeer, D'Arcy Escott, David Webb, Elliot Goldsmith, Daniel Fairlie.
ST. CLEARS U15s 1 TENBY U15s 8
Tenby travelled to St. Clears hoping to maintain their recent good form. Tenby started well and were one up within the first few minutes following some good passing when Adam Johns slotted the ball into the St. Clears net. Within 10 minutes, Adam Johns had his hat-trick. St. Clears were finding it hard to cope with the pace of the Tenby forwards and the ever-reliable Mikey Boswell made it 4-0 with a well-taken goal. Following a free-kick, the Tenby defence were caught napping when a ball was knocked over and a St. Clears' forward slotted the ball past the 'keeper. Tenby soon increased their lead with another well-taken goal by Adam John, who quickly followed it with another - his fifth of the game. Tenby were showing their class, when midfielder Aaron Goldsmith hit a long range shot into the top corner of the St. Clears' goal, giving their 'keeper no chance. Tenby went into the interval with a 7-1 lead. St. Clears came out in the second-half with a mountain to climb, but the Tenby team didn't let up and soon the score was 8-1 when Sean Jones scored a well-taken goal. Although Tenby applied more pressure, the St. Clears team did well not to concede any more goals. This was a good Tenby performance on a heavy pitch and all players contributed well, and for once Tenby didn't have to show their 'bouncebackability'. Tenby squad: Richard Thomas (capt.), Kurt Walsh, Luke Dedman, Joe Scourfield, Sean Jones, Sam Christopher, Aaron Goldsmith, Scott Helmich, Adam Johns, Rob Colley, Mikey Boswell, Michael Halligan, Andrew Hopper. The Picnic Basket sponsored man-of-the-match was Adam Johns. Thanks to Nicky Johns for running the line.
