TENBY UNDER 8s 2 CLARBESTON ROAD UNDER 8s 0 Tenby fought against wintry rain and a determined Clarbeston Road side on Saturday morning to extend their unbeaten run in the Pembrokeshire Under 8s League. The visitors had the opportunity to take the lead straight from the kick-off, with a shot on goal inside 20 seconds. But the blushes of the Tenby defence were spared by Daniel Evans, who made an accomplished save. The Tenby 'keeper did well to deny Clarbeston Road again, before the home side got into their stride and began to exert some pressure of their own. Declan Escott had a shot blocked, and a long free-kick was well held by the Clarbeston 'keeper, before Tenby finally opened the scoring. Dylan Rees picked the ball up just inside the half-way line, and ran down the right, beating two defenders, before his cross was knocked out for a corner. The visitors managed to clear the ball, but it was put straight back in, and Declan Escott fired home Tenby's first. A minute later, a long shot from the prolific Tenby striker slipped through the Clarbeston 'keeper's fingers, and the home side went two-up. Clarbeston Road fought valiantly to get back in the game, but were up against a strong Tenby defensive trio of James Brace, Spencer Williams and Adam Muskett. In midfield, Jannik Coop and Tom Dyson competed well to keep possession and launch further Tenby attacks. But as the pitch became a mud bath, play literally got bogged down in the middle of the park. In the second half, the churned-up pitch made it difficult for Tenby to play their usual passing game. Instead, they tried to run the ball through the opposition. Determined not to go further behind, Clarbeston Road defended in numbers and the Tenby attackers were either forced wide or swamped by blue shirts before they could make room to cross or shoot. As legs tired towards the end of the game, the home side began to find more space, and Scott Ferney almost made it three for Tenby with a low shot that crept inches past the right post. The busy striker had another chance to increase the lead, just before the final whistle, when he intercepted a kick-out from the Clarbeston 'keeper. But again a blue shirt got in the way, and the game finished at two-nil. Following the first game, other members of the Tenby and Clarbeston Road squad played a friendly, which the home side won one-nil with an impressive performance and a goal from Tom Harries. The strength of the Tenby team is starting to gain attention outside the county, and three players, Declan Escott, Spencer Williams and Dylan Rees, have been invited to train with Coca-Cola Championship side Cardiff City! Well done lads. Here's wishing you every success with the Bluebirds. Thanks to Park Road Fish and Chips, Tenby Under 8s kit sponsors. Thanks also to the hard-working behind-the-scenes team who get the boys well prepared before the game and well fed afterwards!

This match was played in wet weather conditions and was a credit to both sets of players, and to the referee, Mark Winters for keeping going throughout. Tenby's line-up was affected by unavailability and illness, but those who took part settled into the system well enough after an initial period when Saundersfoot figured strongly. Andrew Hopper made a fine debut for Tenby against his old side and was very unlucky not to score in the first five minutes. A short while later, Tenby took the lead through Mikey Boswell, but Tom Spencer with two lobbed goals put Saundersfoot into a 2-1 lead as though testing out Tenby's famous 'bouncebackability'. The spectators did not have to wait long for a reply as Adam John equalised for a Tenby team who now looked hungry for a win. Following a Boswell corner on the right, Johns made the score 3-2 for Tenby and soon afterwards Boswell made the score 4-2 on the slippery pitch against a defence that tried hard to give a brave goalkeeper some back-up. Johns continued his recent run of good goalscoring form to make the score 5-2, but even Saundersfoot's efforts to contain their opponents, could not prevent Boswell adding to his already impressive scoring record for the season, to set-up his team with a commanding 6-2 lead at half-time. Richard Bridges replaced an unwell Richard Thomas in the Tenby goal for the second half, to add to the loss of Sam Christopher who had felt ill in the first half. Rhys Winter, slotted in well, replacing Christopher, with Michael Halligan changing to the right flank. He came close to scoring on several occasions after being fed balls through by Boswell. Tenby carried on where they left off, and pressurised the Saundersfoot defence in heavy conditions. Aaron Goldsmith added to his valuable midfield contribution by making the score 7-2 and Boswell and Brett Evans, who was playing really well, both ran through for individual goals which brought the Tenby scoreline to 9-2. Saundersfoot became trapped in their own half and more goals looked likely. Boswell and Johns then finished off moves to bring the score to 11-2. Tenby's defence was looking very solid as the game progressed with Toby Smith, Shaun Jones and Joe Scourfield doing well. Goldsmith added another for Tenby with a long shot, and Richard Bridges was given no chance when a similar effort from Saundersfoot went high into his net. Smith went close on several occasions with fine headers that just skimmed the crossbar. Most spectators thought that was the end of the proceedings, but Brett Evans knew otherwise and took advantage when the visiting goalkeeper lost control, to slip the ball in for a final scoreline of 13-3. Tenby squad: Richard Thomas, Richard Bridges, Rhys Winter, Toby Smith, Joe Scourfield, Shaun Jones, Brett Evans, Adam Johns, Aaron Goldsmith, Michael Halligan, Sam Christopher, Mikey Boswell, Andrew Hopper.
