ST. CLEARS U16s 1

TENBY U16s 15

It was a shaky start for Tenby U16s away to St. Clears at the weekend, as the home side dramatically stole a very early goal.

However, this was to prove to be their undoing as Tenby soon woke up and took control of the game.

George Lander led the way with a quickly taken hat-trick and the goals came thick and fast before the half-time whistle, with Hugo, Joe twice and Sam ensuring a very comfortable 7-1 lead for the T. P. Hughes sponsored side.

In the second half, Tenby continued to dominate, with Goldie grabbing a brace, Lander his fourth, Adie getting a welcome reward for a good game where he found plenty of space, Callum a late hat-trick and Toby popping up from defence to get his name on the score-sheet.

Although this was a very one-sided match, the St. Clears players never gave up and played the game in an extremely sportsmanlike way.

Thanks to coaches John, John and Neil, kit sponsors T. P. Hughes and Jameston Village Stores and the touchline supporters.

Tenby squad: Corey Hill, Cheyne Lloyd, Tom Grover, Toby Rossiter, David Webb, Hugo Wellum, Joe Worley, Sam Butler, James Adie, George Lander, Elliot Goldsmith, Callum Greer, George McBeth, Matt Davies.

Tenby U14s 1

Lamphey U14s 4

A strangely out-of-sorts Tenby U14s side stumbled to its first league defeat in over two years on Saturday, after a spirited performance from visitors Lamphey.

Despite missing a few players through injuries, Tenby started reasonably well, having the majority of possession and coping better with the swirling cross-wind.

After a couple of half-chances at either end, Tenby broke quickly. Kieren Jones latched onto a through ball, evaded the 'keeper and opened the scoring with a low shot just inside the far past.

Undeterred, Lamphey broke back within a minute, finding space on the right for a cross, and volleying in an equaliser.

Tenby had chances to regain the lead, but just couldn't find the back of the net. Kieren Jones had a shot saved at the near post, and Adam Muskett went close with a header. Then the tide suddenly turned.

The home side conceded a free-kick for a clumsy challenge on the edge of area. The ball was lofted in and a Lamphey forward happily looped a free header into the top corner.

This would normally be the signal for Tenby to up their game, but the goal seemed to take the wind out of the Seasiders' sails.

Tenby had a few chances to get back on level terms. Kieren Jones fired just wide, Scott Ferney blasted over after good work from new signing Sam Smith, and Callum Steele also cleared the bar from a corner.

But Tenby seemed to lack their usual confidence and team work, and in the second half were often chasing shadows as Lamphey broke forward and defended as a unit, and at times overwhelmed the home side at both ends of the field,

Kieren Jones and Adam John continued to battle on in the centre of the park, and Tenby had a few more half chances to get level. But with a dozen or so off-target shots in the game, there was little to trouble the Lamphey 'keeper.

As the match wore on, the energetic Lamphey side always looked the more likely to extend their lead. And so it came to pass 10 minutes from time as the visitors turned the Tenby back four inside out and tapped in a third. To compound Tenby's misery at the back, a long ball then slipped through the 'keeper's fingers to gift the visitors an unassailable 4-1 lead.

With the game out of reach, Tenby finally woke up. Substitute, Dan Evans played in Sam Smith who curled his shot just wide. Tenby then had a second ruled out for offside.

So concluded a strangely out-of-character performance for the usually ultra-reliable U14s. Full credit to an excellent Lamphey side for a totally deserved victory - an early warning shot that competition is hotting up and Tenby will need to dramatically raise their game, if they are to have any chance of retaining the league title for another year.
