TENBY U14s 3 PEMBROKE UNITED 14s 0
The Willow Carpentry sponsored Tenby Under 14s started the New Year on a winning note by beating neighbouring Pembroke United, at the Clicketts. Constant morning rain made the surface slippery and Pembroke certainly played the more skilful football. However, with the pitch cutting up as the game wore on, Tenby's route one approach was far less attractive, but probably the best tactics for the conditions. Pembroke attacked at every opportunity, with Declan Carroll and James Russell prominent, but even they found a stubborn home defence, with Patrick Elliott, Dan Edwards, Greg Less-Griffiths, Jake Roberts and Curtis Hurlow clearing any danger. Although, Pembroke had the majority of possession during the opening 15 minutes, it was the Seasiders who scored first, admittedly against the run of play. A long ball out of defence found centre forward, Will Thomas, who played a neat one-two with Jordan Richards, before hitting a shot wide of an outstretched United 'keeper. This goal certainly lifted Tenby and they soon found themselves two goals to the good. Johnnie Delahunty was set free by Richards, but was quickly closed down by two United defenders. Delahunty's strength took him past the first one, but the ball ran too far forward and, as the second defender cleared the ball, the Tenby midfielder blocked it and ran on to score with an unstoppable shot. The pitched very heavy by the time the second half started and Pembroke, to their credit, still tried to play a passing game. Carroll came close to opening the United account, but Roberts in the home goal was equal to the shot.
Tenby scored a third goal midway through the half that secured all three points for them. A clearance from Lees-Griffiths found Gareth Warlow, who took the ball to the bye line and crossed it to Ashley Smith, who, in turn, laid it off to captain, Curtis Hurlow, to rifle into the corner of the goal. Tenby side: J. Roberts, G. Lees-Griffiths, C. Hurlow, P. Elliott, D. Edwards, A. Roberts, J. Richards, J. Delahunty, A. Smith, W. Thomas, G. Warlow, R. Fairlie, A. Heesom, P. Horsley. Before the Christmas break, the Tenby Under 14's beat Hundleton in the cup by six goals to one. Will Thomas grabbed a hat-trick, Aaron Roberts scored two and Gareth Warlow completed the scoring. They now face St. Clears or Johnston in the semi- final.
TENBY U10s A 12 TENBY U10s B 0
Tenby's two Under 10 sides met head to head in a keenly contested tie in difficult weather conditions. With rain persisting for most of the match, it was the A's who took the early initiative. Dylan Rees dominated the right-hand side and showed some great teamwork, linking up well with Tom Dyson and Scott Ferney to apply some good pressure. The B's were constantly pushed back in their own half and all credit must be given to their solid defensive line of Daniel Tiesing, Henrik Jaakola and Joel Downs, who showed much discipline and organisation. Daniel Tiesing put in some key early tackles to break up the A's rhythm, while Joel Downs made an important early clearance to push play back into the A's own half for a throw-in. Spencer Williams collected well, displaying some fine control, running deep into the B's half and unleashing a powerful drive from the left-hand side, which went beyond the reach of Joseph Criddle to give the A's an early lead.
Tenby B's pushed forward showing great character. Sean Conbeer delivered a free-kick deep into the midfield, which was received well by Sam Perrett, who battled forward, but was equally met by Tom Harries, who in-turn showed great awareness by quickly passing to Declan Escott, whose shot was saved well by Joseph Criddle and pushed out for a corner.
Henrik Jaakola read the situation well, calmly collecting the corner and passing out to Joel Downs, whose clearance was cleverly intercepted by Scott Ferney. Running into space and showing great vision, Scott delivered a fine shot into the bottom left-hand corner to push the score to 2-0 to the A's. The A's pressure was clearly showing, with the scoreline further increased when Declan Escott pounced on a loose ball to make it 3-0.
All credit to the B's, who continued to push forward, with Luke Hartland putting in a series of key tackles to win possession and create a range of new options. Dylan Price latched onto a sharp through ball from Sean Conbeer and after some great running, the striker did well to recover from a strong, well-timed challenge from Owen Coombs and break free to deliver a fine shot which was well saved by Daniel Evans.
By half-time, though, the A's had pushed the scoreline to 6-0 - a clear reflection of their level of possession and organised teamwork.
As the second half unfolded, Tenby A's held their formation well, with Dylan Rees displaying some clever trickery and strong running to constantly pick out Tom Dyson in the centre of midfield. Adam Muskett was also brought on to give the A's some new defensive options on the right-hand side. Tenby B's showed great strength and Luke Hartland linked up well with Dylan Price to apply new pressure on the A's defence. Joel Downs played a key pass out of defence onto Dylan Price, who then turned provider and picked out Luke Hartland to start a fresh B's attack.
Spencer Williams was on hand to put in a key tackle and surge forward, but he was equally met by Daniel Tiesing, who calmly took the ball away and passed it out to the midfield. Henrik Jaakola put in a timely interception to deny a fresh attack and set off Luke Hartland on a superb run deep into the A's half.
Joseph Criddle provided some great supporting play and worked hard in the heart of midfield. However, Tom Dyson did well to collect the loose ball and delivered a fine long range drive, which just clipped the top side of the crossbar and went out for a goal kick. The A's were unlucky not to score again when Adam Muskett collected the ball well in midfield and weaved his way through the B's defence to see his shot just go wide.
The A's continued to dominate, with goals from Dylan Rees, Tom Dyson (3) and Declan Escott (2) pushing the final score to 12-0 and rounding off a fine display of teamwork under difficult wet conditions.
All credit to the B's, who continued to push forward and deny the A's numerous other opportunities right up to the final whistle.
Many thanks also to Park Road Fish and Chips, the Tenby Under 10's kit sponsors, and to all the parents for their positive support and encouragement on such a wet and windy morning.
