Tenby Youth, sponsored by PRL Plant Hire, welcomed Whitland from Division A to Heywood Lane in a friendly, arranged as their original opponents, Narberth, were otherwise engaged in a Griffiths Cup match. With opponents from a division three levels above the standard they usually play, as well as still suffering from last week's defeat at the hands of high-flying Crymych, Tenby realised this was an important game where performance was equally as important as the result. Tenby kicked off and from the start put the visitors under pressure when it was obvious that, with so many new combinations taking the field, they were struggling to get organised. This was highlighted when scrum-half Rhys Thomas exploited a gap in the defence to scurry over for an unconverted try following a quick tap and go at a penalty. Whitland responded almost immediately, scoring a similar unconverted try to bring the scores level. The half was brought to a close with BFT firing over a penalty to take the scores out to 8-5 in Tenby's favour. The start of the second half was almost a mirror image of the first period, with Tenby applying all the pressure, but with Whitland standing firm in defence. Their defensive effort was rewarded when they spun the ball wide to score an excellent try wide out and take the lead for the first time in the match at 10-8. Responding, the home side increased their efforts, but as is the case when you are playing catch-up rugby, it was the visitors who snatched the vital try, right at the death, and with the extras added, Tenby went down 17-8 Although the result was a disappointment, team manager John Handicott was pleased with the performance and eagerly awaits the return fixture. Next match is tomorrow (Saturday) away to high- flying Pembroke - support very welcome. Squad: Marvin Thomas, Jamie Marden, Rob Clarke, Ieuan Rowell, Luke Deadman, Rob Tuttle, Grant Rogers. Steve Handicott, Rhys Thomas, BFT, Dave Otten, Ross Mckenzie, Gareth Merrman, Jamie Marden, Jamie Robbins, Dan Colley, Johnathan Lewis, Nathan Allright.
