Sir, Those of us fortunate enough to get tickets to see The Tide Whisperer last week were witness to a remarkable production.
Not only were we made aware of the ebb and flow of the world population due to displacement of its people for reasons of war, religion famine or sexual orientation, but also the talent of those taking part in this inspired story written by Louise Wallwein.
Tenby lent itself ideally to this performance providing platforms for the various parts of the play aboard a boat as if we were the ‘boat people’, looking out to sea from the bandstand as we were imagining red poppies sprouting from the waves in memory of the fallen in world wars, and women and children boarding boats to take them to safety away from Franco and the destruction of Guernica.
Finally we assembled on the harbour sands to witness the rescue of those fleeing from war torn Syria as they washed up on the sands and to hear the story told of Pearl born in the West Indies, but who had lived here since she was three and as a 70-year-old being threatened with deportation.
All this accompanied by a beautiful and haunting musical score
An emotional few hours spent on the perfect natural set, thought-provoking and a privilege to have been there.
Virginia Lort Phillips
