Local councillors have backed plans that would see Tenby benefit from new all weather 4G sports facilities for the town.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Mike Evans once again welcomed the announcement of Pembrokeshire County Council’s new leisure strategy, that would see a significant investment in leisure services across the county over the next 10 years.
With a new pool and ‘family entertainment centre’ being touted for Tenby Leisure Centre, Clr. Evans backed proposals to introduce new 4G pitches, potentially at The Clicketts and the Heywood Lane rugby ground.
Cabinet member for economy, tourism, leisure and culture Clr. Paul Miller recently announced that the Authority would make capital investments to improve leisure access to generate income, with consultants Leisure Strategy working with senior PCC officers and cabinet members to develop a leisure strategy for 2018-28.
“It seems funny to talk about bad weather with all the good weather we’ve had lately, but last winter was horrendous for sports teams across the county, and an investment like this would go a long way to keeping up the fitness of the community and benefiting our local teams,” Clr. Evans told his colleagues.
“We’re not just looking at football and rugby teams, but the likes of hockey as well, for both males and females.
“These type of pitches would have a thirty year lifespan, but the annual maintenance cost would be in the region of £10,000, so we have to decide as a town council whether we want to be a player in this.
“This all needs to be thrashed out over the next six to eight months, but it needs planning, so the town council would not be committing to anything by just supporting the proposal,” he continued.
Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown said that she was al for supporting investment in facilities that would benefit a generation to come.
“At some point over the next few months we really need to start thinking about setting aside funds in our precept to maintain these facilities being proposed,” she remarked.
Clr. Evans added that it was his intention to call a meeting of ‘interested bodies’ in September to discuss the proposals.
