Tenby councillors have given a financial boost to local charitable organisations whose fundraising efforts have been put on hold for the foreseeable future due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
During the town council’s first remote meeting on Tuesday evening - the first time members have held discussions since March - councillors agreed to earmark £20,000 from previously unearmarked reserves in its budget to service any potential grant requests from local organisations such as - Tenby Round Table; Tenby and District Lions; Rotary Club of Tenby; Tenby Male Choir, and other local charities whose sfundraising programmes will have been adversely affected by the pandemic.
“This fund is intended to support Tenby Charities that have been affected by the lockdown. It is intended that this money will help replace funding given to charities at this time and to help those fundraising charities with their core costs,” said Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall after the meeting.
Charitable organisation Tenby Round Table admitted last month that the chances of the popular fundraising ‘Summer Spectacular’ events (hosted by the resort’s charitable organisations) taking place at Tenby harbour this year are slim due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Normally taking place on Sundays from the end of July and throughout August the events - popular on the seaside resort’s holiday season calendar attract thousands of visitors and raise a wealth of funds for charities.
A spokesperson for the Round Table remarked: “It’s hard for us to think of a summer in Tenby without thinking of our summer spectaculars in Tenby Harbour - but unfortunately as we get closer to the summer holidays, it’s looking less and less likely that we will be able to host an event of this size due to the Covid pandemic.
“While these events are our primary charity fundraising events of the year, public safety must come first. So at present we are working on the principle that we won’t be hosting our normal events on the school holiday Sundays.”
