The awards are made to properties nominated by anyone in Tenby and district and judged by a panel independent from the Civic Society.
The society then records the award on a framed certificate which can be presented to the building owner and displayed as the owner sees fit.
This year, there were two nominations. One, the judges felt it would be unfair to judge at the moment as the high quality renovation had not been quite completed and it was unfair to judge until the building was closer to its finished state. We look forward to seeing the finished article next year.
The second nomination was for the Harbwr Brewery, Sergeants Lane. One of the judges commented: “The interior is charming and quirky, with an imaginative use of industrial pieces, pipes and chains, rough and unpolished, hinting at its history and former uses. A clear definition between old and new was evident and yet each blended well with the other. It is cleverly designed, being light and airy, despite being only feet from other buildings. Outside, the ridge tiles, ceramic dragons and reclaimed hand-hewn stones all added to the character.
“In terms of the new use of the building, the Brewery brings a feeling of something special, something crafted and individual. I also feel that it benefits the character of Sergeants Lane, more so because it is hidden and unexpected. It enhances an area of Tenby that has long been in need of characterful renovation and sets a standard which other developers may follow, and for that reason above all others I feel it is highly-successful.”
There is no truth in the nasty rumour that the judges were influenced by sampling the products of the brewery!
The Civic Society is now seeking nominations for this year. The improvements, which can be of any kind provided that they make a lasting contribution to the townscape of Tenby, can be notified to the society via the Town Council offices in the De Valence Pavilion.
