Tenby Town Council is calling out for a new town crier to fill the role.
The most recent person to be town crier, Teifion Powell, recently resigned from the role, due to the fact that he was relocating to Cardiff, while the town’s Sergeant at Mace, Ernie Vokes, sadly passed away in September.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, said that it would be lovely to have a new town crier, and, although it would certainly be a challenge to fulfil the position as well as the late John Thomas did, who served as town crier for more than 30 years, he hoped it wouldn’t put people off.
“To have someone so outstanding for so many years in the role maybe puts people off, as it’s hard to aspire to that standard, but I’m sure there are people out there,” he said, stating that they would also be advertising the posts of Sergeant of Mace and assistant mace bearers.
“Remember, town criers don’t have to be male!” added Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas.
